Of the players who started a league game last year, and were here in the first half of the season, I reckon we've lost:
Vincelot 45
Fleck 40
Martin 29
JOB 20
Phillips 17
Maddison 14
MAF 14
Johnson 12

in their place we have
Jones, Turnbull, Bigi, Rose, Reid, Gadzhev, Sordell, K Thomas, Sayoud (although he's more an academy player)

and of course the loans:
Armstrong 38
Murphy 29
Kent 10
Bigi 9
Morris 1

they've been replaced with
Page, Sterry, McCann, Agyei, McBean

Is it the disaster some are making it out to be? Are the players that have come in up to replacing Vincelot, Fleck, Martin, JOB, Armstrong and Murphy? Not sure the loss of the others will really make much difference. Not to say that we haven't lost good players just that, through injury, they didn't feature much.

And of course we can still pick up free agents or anyone who gets released.
Key for me is to stay in touch with the play offs until the window opens again and see what Mowbray and Venus can do next time round.

I'm happy with the squad, don't know what people are moaning about. Obviously time will tell about Murphy and Armstrong vs Agyei and the new kid, but that's youth loans for you. I think the rest of the replacements are as good or better than what we had last year.

One nitpick would be I'd like another CB, but I get a strong feeling that Mowbray will bring one in on a free.

It isn't a disaster, but it is arguably weaker than last season. Like shmmeee says only time will tell, but I would be surprised if agyei and wright are anywhere near thr level of Armstrong and Murphy. That's the business end of the team.

Still wish we'd have kept Martin mind, and there wikk be tikes when we will need the grit of a Vincelot in the team.

I think Jones will turn out to be a more consistent match winner/game changer than Murphy was plus he's ours.

Big Dan has also looked a very good acquisition so far and over a season I'm hopeful he can go on to get around 15. He also has less of burden than AA had, with Sordell and the lad from the Baggies also noted likely to share the burden.

Time will tell but I'm hopeful that now everything is settled and the system is clocking into place, that it's more a matter of when rather them if the results pick up.

Strength in depth and decent backup options are where I think we will be different from last year.

Where are the disaster comments?

Personally I reckon we will have strong September to kick start our season

I happened to watch the Sheff Utd V Oxford game last week.

Martin was on the subs bench and came on at HT.

He looked the same as he did at City-a big lump that gets bullied.

Oxford went from being 1-0 up to losing game 2-1. Both goals Martin out of position and in the build up he'd got beaten in the air by a player a lot smaller than him.

Martin is just too nice, he hasn't got a vicious side and positioning all over the place.

Great decision to let him go, just like Phillips.

Hope it is stronger.
TBH hadn't heard of many of the players we have brought in so can't comment if they will be any good or not.

We look a bigger side , not necessarily more aggressive but certainly not a side who will roll over .Also feel we own more players who are the creators in the team

I think that adds to a lot of people's perception that we're weaker. For example it's easy to forget Fleck's weaknesses because you're picking him for his strengths when listing your starting XI whereas with new players they still have everything to prove to people. So the natural feeling is we're weaker.

Let's be honest, Fleck had done his time here and both parties need a fresh challenge. I felt it was a big season for him last year, to put himself in the shop window. It never really happened.

The January or summer transfer to the Championship never happened...sideways move to Sheffield United.

I am not too sure we do miss Fleck that much, Stevenson has looked better than Fleck did for most of last season (yes, Stevenson is young and still learning and it is only 2 or 3 games).

Just had a quick look at a sheffield united forum to find out what they think about Fleck. Got sidetracked by a thread on Chris Hussey and it appears he's been found out already.

Hussey has been found out? Is he an actual gangster?

We know where he hid the loot. Three fingers of whisky in him and Hussey will squeal like a hummingbird.

A stronger side with greater depth of options...I'm excited at the prospects once TM settles on his best starting line up, and establishes a plan B in formation.

One or more championship clubs made contact in January though. Strange that he didn't go then or that we didn't cash in.

Wow! I had no idea Fleck was 40 and Vincelot 45 and Morris quite so young. No wonder we got rid of them.

Contact and making an offer are very different things.

Difficult to say till the new squad has a bit of time to gel but biggest difference is probably Armstrong and whether anyone can match his number of goals

I like the look of the current squad, we are potentially lacking an attacking midfielder, but we still have enough.

None of the players that have left are irreplaceable, even Armstrong. He had a fantastic first half season but dropped off a lot during the second half. If Sordell can find form and Agyei continues to improve they will match his goals.

Murphys pace might be missed but we have Jones and Reid to replace him.

Fleck constantly flattered to deceive and Stevenson will become a better player.

Clearly based on last year it's poorer. League table speaks volumes

Does it mean that Sheff Utd have the 3rd worst squad in the league?

What has Sheffield Utd got to do with us? This time last season we were top 4 just beat burton away. Now we're bottom 4. We've scored 2 goals in the league in 6 games. That stat alone shows how poorer the team is this season compared to last.

Goals is the vital thing that's missing, we got lucky in a premier league loan on a untested player. If we had a goal scorer we could well of beat Swindon, Shrewsbury, bury and Northampton. We'd be on 12 points then. 9 better off.
Fine lines....

yes it does but I'm comparing Cov not Sheffield utd. This thread is about our squad being better compared to last season? So far The table clearly shows it's not as good. Time will tell but based on performances and results no way near as good as last seasons team. That is a fact
