Watched Arrival last night. Weird film, I liked the concept but felt it spent too long in the weird dream bits and not enough on the characters and story, then seemed to be over too quickly.

Really enjoyed it, not too nostalgic.
Flashbacks and nods towards the original were very good

Don't know if they could do a third, but a begbie film would be interesting
8/10
Ah I forgot about the loyalist pub scene brilliant

*Spoilers*

The dream sequences are important becuase it's basically her travelling through time with the gift aliens give her. It doesn't really make sense until the end though. I think it's a film that would get better on a second viewing.

I thought it was a very clever and ultimately moving film. Plus it looked amazing on the big screen. The cgi was great.

I watched La La Land the other night purely to check out the hype.

What a letdown. It's basically Hollywood giving itself a blow job. The songs and dancing seem forced and the story is disjointed and unoriginal. There is some nice direction but the whole thing left me cold.

The director's last work Whiplash was far superior.

I understood what they were, I just didn't want to spoiler. I just felt they were overplayed like filler for the complete lack of character development in the movie. I found it trite and shallow to be honest. I liked the concept and if someone told me the story I'd say it was a great story. It was just a film that seemed to never bother to move beyond that idea, like it was both over too quick, but also dragged on in places. So I left feeling they could have done a lot more with the concept in the time available.

That said, I watched a (DVD quality) copy on my home TV, so maybe it lost something in translation to the small screen as a spectacle.

Does a film need character development? Especially one that focuses on one particular event?

I get where you're coming from but in my mind Amy Adams perfectly portrayed a confused yet very intelligent woman trying to overcome personal and professional hurdles.

Even Jeremy Renner was good and I think he's usually a wooden tit!

It's the one where we have visitors from out of space.
The 'spin' where we discover the woman's dreams/visions were the product of a predictive ability she has, was masterful. I didn't see it coming. Definitely a triumph of writing over glamour. 90%

Midnight Special - 8/10 Didn't know anything regarding the movie beforehand and we were pleasantly suprised.

Don't wanna spoil it for others, so I'll just say it's a kind of Road movie, with a twist, brilliantly acted too!

Split - 7/10

The more I think on this film the less I like it. It has a very appealing instant likeabilty to it. That's mostly spurned on by McAvoy's really well rounded performance.

Overall though it's not much more than a cheap thrills B movie. Also the ending is pretty weak. Still worth a watch.

Hacksaw Ridge - 9/10

This film has best action I've ever seen. It masterfully lulls you into a false sense of security with some backstory and character building but when they mount the ridge it's like an adrenaline shot to the heart. Mel Gibson has made the battle scenes look so realistic that you actually feel like you're in the scene and there's a visceral sense of the madness and brutality of war that I've never seen anything like it before on screen. I was open mouthed for a good 15 minutes.

It's also moving and in no way cheesy or sentimental.

A must see. Don't be cheap and download it either, it's a film made for the big screen.

Saw Lego Batman at the weekend. Loved it, so did my 7 year old.

If you liked The Lego Movie, you'll like this. Same kind of comedy. Excellent writing.

8/10

Thinking of going to see Logan tomorrow, anyone seen it? If it's no good, anything else at the cinema worth a shot?

Seen some crackers recently.

Lego Batman, lot of heart and tonnes of jokes. more like a batman spoof than anything else. my Lad is now absolutely crazy for anything Batman. way better than your standard non Pixar CGI kids movies 8/10

A Monster Calls. Amazing. can't recommend enough. Like a kick in the guts, so sad. Definitely not a Kids movie. probably the less you know the better. 9/10

Manchester by the Sea. one scene made the movie, heart breaking and totally justified the awards for the other Afleck. 8/10

The great wall. 6/10. Good in parts, boring and slow in others, told a relatively good story. I wouldn't rush to go and see it but if there's nothing else on its worth a watch.
