You're right.

I was there too and had no idea what was going on that night. I was urging our team forwards to go and try and win the game. I was right under the scoreboard so couldn't see the scoreboard, so the whole thing baffled me at the time.

Of course it was wrong. No-one has ever denied that I don't think, but like you say, it is 40 years. Absolutely ridiculous to hold such a grudge for such a ridiculous length of time.

I would be thoroughly ashamed and embarrassed to hold such a bitterly jaundiced view after all these years.

It reminds me of a bloke I used to know who worked at Sainsbury's many years ago. He was a manager there and he hated all Americans and I mean REALLY hated ALL Americans just because his wife had an affair with one American.

Otis, you really think the players didn't know the Sunderland score before it was on the scoreboard? We were masters at having to escape relegation on the last day of the season, and I bet knowing, and passing on to the players what we needed to do to stay up in the closing minutes was a regular occurrence.

Calling having the score on the scoreboard "cheating" as their fans do is moronic.

It makes me laugh they go on about a 15 minute delay, then about CCFC keeping the ball in our own half, and yet one of their fans posts a link to a Bristol City report as "proof" that says 5 minutes delay, and that BCFC kept the ball for the remaining minutes... They really ought to try and keep to the same "facts" for their hatred.

Oh yes, of course the players knew. The scoreboard thing is a just a red herring. Word gets from the touchline to the players for sure, course it does.

The notion that Jimmy Hill instructed the scoreboard operator to put up the score for the players' benefit is pure nonsense.

The delay thing has become an urban legend thing too. It's down to the police to delay games for safety reasons such as there was on the night, not the club.

Obviously though the 'truth' is that Jimmy Hill arranged the delay and did so with the Nostradamus like powers of knowing that Sunderland would lose that night.

The Police delayed the game, and it should have happened at Goodison also. I was at the game and it was a proper game of football until the last 10 minutes.

It was, but then it became farcical. That of course though had absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with Bristol City at all!! They were completely innocent and took no part in the debacle.

As Jimmy Hill also 'owned' the police at the time (as well as the country, monarchy and half of Europe) he DEMANDED the police delay the game on the off chance of us either winning or drawing AND Sunderland losing.

It was a masterplan extraordinare!

Why let 'facts' get in the way of 40yrs of self flagellation. They clearly like to relive those days of failure with waves of self pity. The rest of the footballing world has moved on. Do they seriously believe 40 yrs on that if they hadn't got relegated then they wouldn't still be relegated with Moyes today.
If they had had one really successful season in the top flight since then they would have forgotten us forever. Instead they are always looking over their shoulder and replaying the final few minutes of a game none of them witnessed. If it wasn't so funny I would feel sorry for them.
Just to say I have known a number of Sunderland fans over the years and not one has held a grudge. In the 80s I played in a team with a couple of Sunderland fans and we often talked about our respective teams...no animosity just a deep rooted feeling of living in the shadow of bigger, more successful rivals (villa and Newcastle).

I think they should be worrying about being in the championship next season,Their two best players Defoe and Pickford will be off in the summer and they could slip through the leagues like us!!

Let's be honest it was pretty poor form by hill. Not so much the end result but going into the Bristol changing room afterwards and sharing a bottle of champagne with their manager.

I can understand not forgiving Hill - not that it really seemed to bother him - but the club is irrelevant.

I'd have more of a grudge if I was a Norwich fan against the club.

The poor form wasn't the delay or the flashing up of the score on the scoreboard. It was the collusion to not participate in a competitive match.

I have to say I was angry myself at the time. I wanted us to try and win the match.

The problem here is the 40 year timescale. I just couldn't bring myself to be bitter about such an incident 4 decades down the line.

If it happened today we'd have been docked points and relegated.

Visiting Sunderland is like going back in time so it makes perfect sense that they are still living in the 70s.
It's a beautiful town though! ;)

Yes, but it didn't and it had been today it wouldn't have happened with all the media coverage, TV, radio, reporters etc.. Therefore it's a moot point.

I've been tormenting them today when I had a quiet period at work. It's really immature but feck it's good fun....they really are so pissed off about it still.

I really wanted to just post once but once I started I couldn't help myself...:)

Just read through. Couldn't give a flying fuck what Sunderland fans think but wanted a laugh.

Barring about 4 decent fans, the majority of them just don't get it do they?

In 1977 regardless of Hill delaying the game, they went down because they didn't win enough games over the season!! Deary me are they stupid!!!

The game in 97 at spurs was delayed as well , and low and behold they were relegated again.
I always remember asking my old dad at the Bristol game , "why are the players not moving" Still recall him shouting we're safe now son , we're safe.

A lot of Coventry fans don't even know Sunderland hate us , and the fact they blame 15 minutes on their relegation over a whole seasons worth of guff on our club and its supporters is truly pathetic , them and Sheffield United fans sit well together

"the people who supported the nazis were as bad as the nazis"

so what does that make the people who supported adam johnson?

The thing they seem unable to grasp is if they had won their game they were safe.
The people who actively supported the nazis were just as bad as the nazis. It's exactly the same thing

Their comments are just sad and the nazi ones and the ww2 bombing ones just show how unintelligent and unpatriotic they are. They just need to get over the fact that their chairman wasnt as innovative as ours.

Do they want to swap places?

Bunch of wankers! Aside from the odd few on that thread and the genuine Sunderland fans that can let go of a an incident 40 years ago.

Reading their thread is so sad and funny: no sense of perspective, no sense of history, no sense of reality. For those Sunderland people who lived through the war as civilians or service personnel they would be Turing on their graves with some of the comments.

Godwinn's Law being invoked by someone crying about a 40 year old relegation is quite special.

Coventry kept half of Sunderland in employment for years when they came down here to work in our pits and car factories I worked with a few at Keresley colliery, all they ever talked about was the prospect of beating Newcastle, didn't matter if they lost the rest or got relegated so long as they beat the Toon.
