I can see Lithuania equalising. We badly need a second goal.

So the player who scored the goal and the player who made it are withdrawn.

Nice finish by Vardy.

I love it when someone needlessly moaning is made to look silly.
And I love it when someone who has not made a single intelligent comment in a thread feels he has to make a snarky comment about someone else's post.

Intelligent comments like suggesting Rooney would play and Lithuania were about to score an equaliser?

Although we are winning it's boring to watch.
I hate the ball going repeatedly across the back four, it's just bloody frustrating. When a full back gets the ball the first thing he thinks is to turn and pass it either back or across the back four. Show some initiative and pass it forward, create something or at least try.
I feel the stats world has took over the world of football, all they are interested in is pass completion stats and stuff like that. Take a risk and try and be creative

This spat is better than the game.

On the bits I saw that was rubbish, so many defensive players against a team that would struggle in league one. Southgate is no more suitable than Russell Slade.

Dull game but we did what was needed. Good to see Alli becoming established in the 10, you'd hope he'd be first choice there for the next 10 years at least. With Kane back we should look more dangerous up front too.

Ox in holding midfield?

That's where he's played for most of this season. So happy for Defoe. Could've had 2 or 3.

Not the most thrilling of games but they never are against sides of that level.

Saw your flag, CJ, behind the goal?

I really don't understand what England are meant to do in some people's eyes.

They're effectively playing vs 11 defenders in these games, it's not going to be free flowing attacking football.

The only thing England could do, IMO, is sit back themselves and counter, as more space will be created. But then they'll be ridiculed for being defensive

If it was me I would have left out Dier and played two strikers but as he only picked three in the squad it must have been difficult, what they should do is play a high intensity game and wear the opposition out.

How would they do this against 11 players sat in the last third?

This whole format is pointless and boring. There are now far too many teams in groups and the whole system needs revising.

There should be a lower tier qualifying first and then the winners of those meet the main nations. Playing Malta San Marino Lithuania blah blah is a waste of time.

Every time you get the ball you run at them and I know they are seen as prehistoric in modern football but cross the ball (I hated the way Slade played) to a big chap like Carroll with Defoe to pick up the scraps as he is the best finisher in England easily

It also does not improve them as they learn nothing by sitting back, it's just greed wanting more and more games and making it even more boring

But how is this meant to wear them out?

I agree, we need to put more crosses in, etc. But the issue is, you have nearly a whole team in the penalty area defending.

The sitting back technique, is the best defence against teams like England.

If you are constantly putting the ball in the box it will wear them out and they will also make mistakes, passing it between the centre backs and the not needed defensive midfielder (whoever came up with this awful position) while they sit back does nothing.

I 100% agree with this. But there's not many options when playing vs 11 defenders :/

We had 3 up top plus Dele in the number 10 but only one recognised striker. It was more like a 424 than anything else really. Agree on the last point. I just wish we had 10 Adam Lallanas.

Hart's the best we have at the minute and I think he gets too much stick. The media peddle the "he's dodgy" line, then that gets in everyone's heads, then Hart's head and so on...

Only other keeper is Forster, he's decent.
I dunno, i was always a massive hart fan but think hes gone a bit rubbish over the last 3 or 4 years.

I remember when he was on loan at Birmingham and first broke into the team at man city he was probably the best keeper in the league and possibly up there with the likes of neuer and others in europe. Now players like de gea and lloris are miles ahead of him imo and thats just premier league.

I know there was a theory that hes never been quite as good as he used to after he suffered an injury a few years back. They were showing stats of how many goals he concedes when diving one direction, compared to the other and comparing these to hart before the injury. The goals he conceded against Wales and Iceland were used as examples where he let in what should have been a relatively comfortable save to his left hand side on both occasions.

I'm not saying drop him with immediate effect but i think we should be looking at slowly breaking in his successor (Butland?) and phasing hart out over the next few years.

I think Hart is way ahead of the rest at the moment he seems a lot calmer now he is Italy, Butland or Pickford will take his place in time.

not really. have seen some good football in his first few games with technical play, movement of ball, good passing etc

lithuaina was job done, all it needed to be.

It's a job done but my view is that you need to batter these teams so they never get any confidence

they parked bus so its not always easy to rip teams apart. also lithuania always been a level above san marino, faroe islands etc

I don't ever think we will destroy teams with GS as manager. That's not a criticism of him but he doesn't set his teams up that way. I liked 3 at the back as we do have two superb full backs so I think we stick to that tactic
