Tommy off to Coventry - News - 1st XI - Eastbourne Borough FC - The Sports

COVENTRY CITY STATEMENT
Former Southampton midfielder Tommy Widdrington is set to join the Sky Blues backroom staff, and will lead the club’s player recruitment programme.

As a player, Tommy racked up over 300 Football League appearances and the 45-year old brings a wealth of experience and contacts across the English Football League (EFL) and at non-league level.

The new recruitment structure has been established to ensure Coventry City FC has a working department dedicated to identifying and securing suitable player targets.

CCFC Chairman, Tim Fisher said: “We’ve bought Tommy in to be the cornerstone of a new recruitment process. As a club, we have identified player recruitment as a weakness, and want to put a robust structure in place to ensure we address this shortfall.

“Tommy brings a healthy amount of knowledge and experience, and will be leading a team of scouts to ensure we source players who are right for this football club.”

CCFC Manager, Mark Robins said: “Tommy has come on board as part of the club’s need to develop a strategic recruitment department, which will be taking shape over the coming weeks.

“This appointment is the first step in that process, and I’m pleased to have the experience of Tommy to lead the department.”

Hopefully the first of the many problems at the club to be fixed ..
Others thoughts?

"As a club, we have identified player recruitment as a weakness, "

Another dig at Venus perhaps?

Then again, when Presley left it was alleged that he 'stole' the scouting system, so it does date back sometime that we've failed in that area, bar the one 'lucky' window we had with getting Murphy, Armstrong and Kent, but I still say that was luck rather than us knowing they'd do as well as they did

All purchases are luck. Think Gary Collier, think Keith Drinkell, think Craig Bellamy. No guarantees.
Good luck to Widdrington and well done the club for supporting the manager.
Time to get behind Coventry City or go and do what you do on a Saturday afternoon. Not aimed at you SW88

Totally agree mate, our best manager for a long time always liked what he's had to say .. no nonesence say it as it is.. hopefully this is where we turn a corner and the club back the manager ! Seen he worked under mark at Huddersfield also so obviously trusts him.

The bit about a 'working department' seems a dig at MV

Wonder if he has to sell houses at the weekend? I have no real opinion on this one other than the proof is certainly in the pudding!

In fairness Drinkell and Bellamy came with good reputations. In particular Bellamy wasn't a terrible signing per se, just not the player we needed.

If I remember didn't Pressley complain at a fans forum that there was no scouting system in place and then got one going?

Let's hope he's already a good "network" of non league gems who are already blooded with a season or two under there belts that are ready to kick on there careers into the football league.
Positive appointment, may well prove fruitful starting this summer!

Bet you were angry when we signed stokes and would be angry if we sold him.

I wanted someone who knows non league and that's what we've got so I'm pretty happy. We'll just need to keep him away from the touchline and Budweiser and he'll be fine :)

Sounds like a good appointment. Does beg the question, why didn't mowbray or Venus* sort this earlier given they mentioned it enough times.

*not included Slade as he was always just a short term appointment until the end of the season.

Waggot was doing it ahead of TM's permanent appointment. Maybe it was another undelivered promise. Was also supposed to happen under SP which seems to have meant that SP went to Currys and splashed out on a new laptop.

This bodes well for me, finally we have a dedicated Head of Recruitment that will be scouring non-league teams for suitable talent. As has been mentioned, players from off the FL grid will give their all for the club, potentially.

Only time will tell, but this is a definite shove into positivity for the club. Let's hope Fisher doesn't find a way to fuck it up...

"want to put a robust structure in place to ensure we address this shortfall."

This is the bit I like, 4 buzzwords in one sentence.
Unfortunately, you can identify and sign players but who knows if they will put in any effort.
Good players can be tainted by a bad atmosphere around the club.

That's how we survived 34 years in the top flight. When we started spending beyond our means the club's demise followed

You know what, you are right..how silly of me not to know this,oh well at least you'll be safe in the knowledge knowing this when we are heading out of the leagues next season altogether,we never had a board hellbent on destroying us back then either, but we were playing top flight football back then, not 4th DIVISION,i mean league 2..

Yeah, so signing players from the league below won't be that much of a problem

Not taken personally :)

Out of those names mentioned, I only know Bellamy, and what a cock he turned out to be :D

Let's hope we find more Robbie Keanes than we do Bellamy's!!

Kevin (not Keith) Drinkell should have been an excellent player for us, but was crocked when he came here IIRC

No he called in favours from mates to do scouting and share information they had on players. In fairness the quality improved but his tenure was almost over. Then some fans moaned about him taking the information with him.
