Ouch!

I've never played in Florida BBB but played a couple of games in Alabama. Could never get the hang of pitching beyond the hole and allowing for backspin or no run at all. Playing our way was no use at all, reckon I could have matched his score no problem lol.

I run our company golf league and we get all sorts of standards. Its just a 9 hole league but we had a 40 gross and 61 gross yesterday so big differences in the standard of player.
We all have fun and that is the most important thing.

We also use a fantastic app called 'Gamebook Golf' where you can play with big groups and see everyone's scores on the course.
It also tracks your scores and stats so you can look at where you need to improve.

If any of you guys are at least keen on golf its a great free app!!

Had a poor afternoon on the course. Went round in 108. Hit an absolute beauty of a second shot on the 17th. Hit the first shot long and was right behind a tree. Couldn't see the green at all, hit it with a 3 wood with a slight slice and it ended up perfectly about 10 yards of the green.

I moved to Florida and EVERYONE plays.
The courses around here are amazing.
I have played TPC Sawgrass twice and the course that TIger woods had his crash in the golf cart when his swedish (?) wife caught him cheating... an amazing course called 'Isleworth Golf and Country Club'. Played with Paula Creamer on that one!! :adore.

Been very lucky with golf here.
I'm over in Orlando tomorrow if you fancy a game, trying to get a game at bay hill but you have to stay there

Sorry mate, didn't see this until late.
Orlando is about 2 hours north of where i am, and i was playing golf on Saturday anyway.
Did you play anywhere in the end?

Played my first ever game of golf on Saturday. 18 holes, went round in 150!

Much room for improvement...
If it was a full course, that's not too bad for a first ever attempt. I'll bet more than half of those 4 extra shots per hole were around the greens.

was going to create a new thread but this seems perfect. can i have some tips on starting playing please?

basically i am going mexico in late august and hotel has this lush golf course.i have stayed at other hotels wioth courses too but never played because...well i cant lol. but this time i want 1 round as i have some hotel credits to use.

my past experience is pitch and putt memorial park, driving rnage when i was 14 at johnny raeys and crazy golf lol

i have googled lessons and johnny raeys do 17 pound for 30 mins and ansty golf course does 1 hour for 20 if 2 people go.

do you guys reccomend a place for lessons in particular? also how many lessons do you think i would need before august?

and finnaly i assume its a good idea to hit the johny raeys range as much as possible?

Thanks

Picked up the clubs for the first time in 12 months last Friday and shot a 53 across 9 holes at Copsewood. A 9 on the 1st worried me a bit but managed to pick up some nice pars.

Score would've been much improved if I'd not tried to be greedy and drive the water on a couple of holes and laid up with a 3 / 5 wood instead :D

Thanks Rich.

It was the bit between teeing off and the putting which I found the hardest. So many scuffed shots!

Putting was actually my biggest strength, if it wasn't for that it would have been more like 200!

did you have lessons first or just go and play?

I just got thrown in as it was for a mates stag. I have done a 9 hole par 3 like five or six years ago, but essentially had no technique or idea what to do whatsoever.

I think I would have massively benefited from having some lessons, but like everything it is just practice. If you have any mates that play I would go for a game with them. That way you can practice, get some tips, and have some fun at the same time.

I'd probably get in touch with Alistair at Forest of Arden. He does group sessions that are £50 for 3 hours. He does four guys in that time so you see him, practice what he's told you and then go back in. Alistair Davies Golf Alternatively Martin at Coventry Golf Club is a cracking guy.

I would not reccommend Jonny Reay for lessons. I've been on the range and seen enough lessons to know they aint great.

no mates that play golf but one is open to idea of learning with me

will book a lesson with ansty or jonny raeys soon hopefully.
I used to take lessons at Jonny raeys. Not sure who is still around but if Scottish rob is there he was pretty good, he also is the pro at the windmill so you can get on the course too. Always a little misleading when hitting from a tee

Cheers. I read first courses you should try sre 3 par ones. We have a few in cov it seems. Will do that before my holiday too

Do these courses supply the clubs btw? I don't want to buy my own do soon.

Yes allesley park is okay for a slash around and a bit bigger that memorial park. If your feeling good, try the Warwickshire castle course, great par 3 course.

Most hotels with courses have a hire facility, usually Calloway. Not cheap however particularly with buggy on top

Do you think in 3 months i could be in shape not to completley embarass myself on a huge course?

Also if you hit ball far how do you find it on a big course? Lmao

put the work in then yes its possible. The main shot you need to play is the first tee off where there is likely to be a starter, that's the nervous one! You get past that one then you will be fine!

I'd recommend either Luke Melling or Jon Williamson at Ansty. Had lessons with both, and it depends how you learn best. Jon puts the actions and motions into practicalities so it's easier to understand. Luke is a lot more technical, concentrating on angles and positions. Whichever would work best for you really. I'd have one-to-one lessons myself, more concentration on your swing.Think both do 6 half-hour lessons for £100. Have them every couple of weeks and just get down the range and practice what you've been taught in between.

I think CovStu is making out if you are playing in a society or club competition there may be someone announcing who's up to play so if you're up first then you'll have a bit of an audience.

In most cases at large courses (rather than Allesley pitch & putt) it'll just be you and your mates on the tee with possibly a group waiting behind you if it's a busy day.

My 2p would be to get yourself a nice lofted club (7 iron up) and just practice practice and practice some more with that. Whether that be on a field, at Jonny Reays or at a par 3 course (Stoneleigh Deerpark is one that comes to mind). Start with a 3/4 backswing, keep your feet square with the ball in the middle of your stance, have a nice tempo to your backswing and don't lift your head immediately after you've fit the ball.

My first ever round of gold was at Penina. It was a Company jolly, and the round of gold was part of the "all inclusive" trip, so the other guys persuaded me to do it. It was a shame to have a hacker like me on such a beautiful course, but, on the 17th (i think) I fluked a birdie !! We had an inter department golf competition when I got back, so again, the guys persuaded me to play. Lent me clubs bag etc. I won through 3 rounds before going out.

That was it. I started to play more often (maybe 6 times a year) and had a few lessons. It wasn't enough to get good, but at least more enjoyable. The lessons were well worth it. Knowing how to hold the club made a major improvement for me. One thing I remember though, I used to blame my really bad shots on not keeping my eyes on the ball. The Pro put me right. He took 4 shots without even looking at the ball, all long, and straight as a die !! Told me it was more about keeping your head still through the swing. Simple advice really, but something i still remember when setting up for the shot, so helped a lot.

As a side note, saw Henry Cotton there. Glad he didn't see me dig up his course....

Never had one in all my years playing golf except for when I've played on society days. Granted I've never played in Mexico (it was way to hot for that kind of activity when I was there :D ).

I played in Mexico and they didn't have one, although we teed off around 7 in the morning so we were out before it go too hot.

They had an all inclusive cart that came round several times. Hammered by the time we came off there.

this is too daunting lol

If you want to play, get some lessons in. Probably one a week or fortnight before you go away, and a visit to a driving range every week as well. It may be good to play a couple of courses before you go as well. If Mark McKay is still at Brandon, he is a cracking coach.

Its a great game but tough, and its not just about smacking the ball as far as you can off the tee, as the short game around the greens is a huge challenge as well.
Its also a very mental game. If there's anyone waiting at the tee when I play I try to put them out of mind, as if I am thinking about them and not my shot that's when I top it or slice it straight onto the next fairway. Same with a lake or a bunker, as soon as I think about it, that's where my ball goes!
Its a great game when dry, but shite in the wet ;)
