My main fear is a US style insurance system. I know you work either in or with the NHS and have a good knowledge of it's workings so it's good to hear you think that's not realistic.

It will never happen.

IMO that was a reason why she was did not get the landslide victory expected.

If you told her she'd have 43% of the vote she'd have always taken that - ukip shifting to labour was never predicted by anyone

Considering Corbyn kept the debate away from Brexit, it was certainly a surprise but a lot of them wold probably never vote Tory either.

Why would she have taken losing her majority?

43% has always translated into a huge majority in an election in the last 35 years.

But massively pleasing nonetheless...

In a way I wish Corbyn had won. It would be kind of funny to see all those socialists as the mortgage rates career out of control, mclusky starts organising strikes demanding inflation busting pay rises and the economy grinds to a halt.

God forbid! We've seen it all before, and it wasn't nice.

I got my first mortgage in 1991, the Interest rate was 15%, I'm sure you know that the Tories had been in power for 12 years at this point. High interest rates are not exclusively socialist.

Remind me what we're we in when those rates went through the roof?

Yes of course... we'd have seen an immediate rise from 0.25% to a billion%

Good to see the scaremongering out in force - the only efficient thing the government can do these days is regularly make up shit they can't back up.

Meanwhile.... IMF: higher taxes for rich will cut inequality without hitting growth

The IMF has recently issued a report on higher tax rates and inequality. It was reported in the Guardian and seized upon by Labour to justify hiking tax rates.

IMF: higher taxes for rich will cut inequality without hitting growth

The Guardian report doesn't contain any untruths. However it misses a very important point. The IMF recommends a top taxation rate of 44% (optimised to the Laffer curve to avoid disincentivisation to pay/stay and hitting investment and growth). As the UK highest tax rate is presently 45%, the UK is already slightly above the optimum level (according to the IMF at least). The IMF report is not about the UK. Doesn't stop Labour and the Guardian for using the report for propaganda though.

Sorry Ian, I appear to have come across the same news story. Wasn't following this thread recently so didn't see your post until I had replied already.

Weren't Labour talking about wiping out some student debt? I expect that those same posters who were critical of it will also be outraged an claim the Tories are buying votes.

Then again, maybe not...

Chancellor Philip Hammond 'planning big, revolutionary budget'
The same thing that they had admitted they hadn't costed. When they found out it would cost 100 billion Corbyn changed his tune

Jeremy Corbyn accused of U-turning on student debt promise that he never made

I expect that Hammond will receieve similar criticism on this thread then. Oh, and be careful about quoting the Independent as well.
I know that whatever news outlet is used someone will try and find fault with it if it doesn't look good for Labour or the EU.

I have pointed it out as you like to bring the subject up. But you never mention the about turn by Corbyn. He used it to buy the student vote. And it worked.

If Hammond announces like Corbyn that he will wipe out student debt and then does nothing like Corbyn I will bring it up. Especially if someone like yourself with Corbyn brings it up trying to make Hammond look good.

If Hammond comes out and actually says it I will give him the same shit I have Corbyn if it isn’t costed.
But that is all ifs and maybes? He hasn’t actually said this is going to happen. So will just wait and see.

I thought that there was an agreed concenus that the Independent was for dribbling europhiles? Strange that as a neutral you didn't point this out to those posters in the past.

Who agreed to that?

Would you like to give a list of what we are allowed to quote?

Was OK when it wasn't good for May and the Tories earlier though ;)

I have no problem with it. I am just trying to stop you for being put into our dribbling club.

I don't care. I just let those looking for an excuse froth at the mouth when they say a certain outlet shouldn't be used. Then wait for them to either use that outlet or agree with someone who uses it.

Would you believe me if I said someone even quoted The Sun recently? :shifty:

Amusing people slag off Labour for u-turns yet no mention of the 50% of the Tory manifesto that was ditched when they realised it was harmful.

And a myth perpetuated by people who are apparently "neutral".

amazing isn't it, people would rather concentrate on issues with the policies, (both made up and real) of a party who aren't in government and a manifesto that won't be implemented than they would on what is actually happening and what a mess the current government is making.

Not if you believe some on here.

At least Torch thinks you are 'neutral' and you agree with him

Corbyn was asked would he liked to wipe out student debt, he said yes if he could find a way.
It wasn't policy, it wasn't on the manifesto.
May was asked if she'd authorise a nuclear strike, she said yes, doesn't mean she promised to, doesn't mean it policy.
