His international record is very similar to lionel messis

Seems certian to break the all time England goalscoring record.

And if you think back, in days of old there was a huge gulf between the good sides and the poor sides in international football and England would regularly beat teams by 3, 4, 5 and 6 goals.

Rooney has had to do it on a more even playing field on the whole.

I just think he gets alot of stick , when in reality he is playing in what can be regarded as the weakest england team since the early 90s , and if we are wishy washy about who he has scored against , then you should really say the same about most top european strikers , who in turn have scored many goals against bad opposition

1 world cup goal in 3 world cups...
Well yes i understand that , but what does it really mean , messi scored v nigeria iran and some other poor side , klose is the all time world cup goalscorer but i wouldnt regard him as the greatest ever . Too many variables

2 more than rooney

i wouldnt scapegoat him, i just dont think he's as good as the hype would have you believe, like anyone else in the side he shouldnt be undroppable, and i don't agree with playing him out of position for the sake of playing him.

I just dont see how somebody that will end up man utd and england all time top scorer can be branded overrated .
i suppose its his lack of flair and tricks , doesnt matter anyways

fair enough, its all about opinions, i wouldn't say its because of a lack of flair and tricks, i just see him as a bit of a flat track bully.

decent freekick tbf, keeper should have done better

How many of Rooney's England goals were penalties? A good proportion I'll bet.

Good free kick

Any half-decent goal keeper would have saved that. It was a goal-keeper error. He comfortably reached it, he just fumbled it. What about the later free kick that Rooney sent skywards over the bar or the wild volley he should have headed in for an easy goal. Or the one-on-one with the GK that he fluffed. Or the innumerable times he gave away possession.

Read this on BBC debating Rooney, think it goes to show his goalscoring tally has hardly been breathtaking...

I think there should be an asterisk next to WR's final tally as his 44 goals include:
4 vs San Marino
3 V Kazakstan
2 V Estonia, Belarus, Andorra, Montenegro, Slovakia and Iceland
1 v Macedonia, Lichenstein

That is nearly half his goals (21) vs absolute nobodys.

Given he has 5 of his 44 from the spot and only 6 goal are at tournaments, with 4 of them more than a decade ago.

It's shocking.

I've just never gone along with the view that he is "world class"

gives the the ball away far too often to be called that.

If Rooney is world class based on his international goal scoring record, what does that make Robbie Keane, who has played in a far worse international team but now has 60+ goal at virtually 1 goal every 2 games?

I don't think Rooney is world class. He is a very good international player though. despite not proving it in tournament finals.

Would say he would have got in most England teams of the last 40 years or so. I do always feel he could do better though and is only operating at 80%. We all know what he is capable of, but sometimes I just don't feel he is operating to his full capacity, even though he runs around tirelessly.

Problem is Rooney isn't as good as the fans and media thinks he is. When he arrived in 2004, people expected to go onto be world class and one of the world greats and it wasn't really gonna happen.

He's not as good, and has never been as good as the elite players like Messi, Ronaldo, Suarez, Bale, Ibrahimovic etc.

Yet everyone expects him to be as good as these players when he isn't.

He comes under the next bracket of players along with people like Tevez, Cavani, Van Persie and his career statistics compares favourably with similar calibre of players.

He's has came in for some unjust criticism, if we're gonna criticise Rooney for not being world class and as good as Ronaldo/Messi then you have to criticise almost every England player in history. Difference is for some reason Rooney is expected to be as good as these players when he isnt which is why he gets the criticism.

If Robbie Keane had been English he'd also have been bigged up as world class
