I read a book once by a Liverpool fan chronicling his time following his team home away
And abroad, Coventry City got two mentions in the book.
The first was him recalling bunking in at HIghfield Road and the strange sight of little blue
Disabled buggys around the perimeter of the pitch.
The second was responding to a question he'd been asked, which club had bought the
Biggest away attendance to Anfield,
His answer.
Believe it or not it was Coventry, took everyone by surprise turning up one wet Tuesday
Night for a poxy league cup game or something, Fucking thousands of em,
All wearing them sheepskin coats, honestly there must have been 12.000 of em.

Can't remember what the book was called, I'll try and dig it out.:)

I was at that game at Anfield. We did have a massive following that night of over 10k I think it was. It was a great game too with Wallace giving us the lead (the picture of him turning away with his clenched hand in the air as the ball rolls back out of the net was the cover picture on a book by Neville Foulger on the Sky Blues). Liverpool hit back with two goals of their own before a late City goal by I think Powell earnt a replay. I think the whole of the Anfield Road end (terracing) was given to City and certainly the stand along one side. There was a lot of trouble on the terracing with a lot of home "supporters" in with the away fans. The journey home seemed never ending as real pea souper fog came down which meant traffic crawled most of the way back to Coventry. Great occasion though and a great match. Typically having done the hard part we lost the replay.

With regard to the Charity Shield attendance, this was and I am sure still is, the record away attendance for a club in this country.

Just had a look and found the book. This is Ian Wallace just after he scored the first goal. Possibly Emlyn Hughes behind him. City fans in the background. Sorry it is the wrong way up. I can't see how to rotate it.
Looked this game up in the book. Attendance of 33k at Anfield for the first match, 36k at HR for the replay. A long time ago but an indication of how big a fan base this club potentially has with a little success.

Was at the anfield game also. I was at university at the time (Lancaster) and me and another city fan along with a couple of Liverpool fans organised a coach to take us there. More scousers than city fans on the coach (a few evertonians became sky blue for the evening)

We were picked off by the scousers that night. It was an great game but a truly unpleasant after match experience, coach window put in, clothes stolen etc....if my memory serves me right we had played Everton in a top of the table clash at goodison just before and lost 6-0.

Love the kit, so iconic, everyone knows who we are.

I remember us taking more than that to Wolves in 73. Can anybody stand that or or shoot it down?

Remember that game too. I think we had 17k. Really disappointing performance too. We had Stein and Alderson up front they had Dougan and Richards. I really thought we were going to Wembley that year as we had a team playing well and full of goals. Never got going in that game, lost 2-0.

Didn't Dougan get knocked out in the warm up? Long time ago so I could be wrong!

It talks of this in the book ( the one by the Liverpool fan) how they hid amongst the
Tenement blocks down the Scottie road and ambushed all the fleeing city fans and
Nicked their Sheepskin coats, and then how for the next few weeks people were
Turning up everywhere wearing them.

Weirdly, I remember quite a bit from Cup Final day from travel match and coming home again, but absolutely nothing from the Charity Shield. The only two times I've been to Wembley.

What Liverpool took more fans than seats and Barca had no fans there?
89845 was the gate so apologies, actually there was some Barca kits on kids but no groups of Barca fans and I think that 89845 is pretty close to 90k and if I am not mistaken that is more than 55000. M&B stand; bravo!

11k to be precise ;)
Remember the night very well, especially the journey home with all of the accidents on the M6 due to the fog. We spent the night sleeping in the car at Knutsford Services.
Yes I seem to remember that we took 11,000 fans that night. The stand at the side that we were in was the Kemlyn Road stand.

90 plus did make me chuckle, I'm all for a bit of exaggeration pal, but you've gotta be sensible!

I remember Dougan being injured during the warm up and the start being delayed. Unfortunately, he was like Lazarus recovering and won almost everything in the air against Roy Barry and Bobby Parker. We certainly took a big following.

There's a thread in the annals from when I first joined the forum about the experiences that night up at Anfield but I can't find the link
What a night.
Think Tommy Hutch had a good goal disallowed too.
Possibly a rare header.

Edit ;-something like 'Worst ever away day'
(experience)

As Irish and others have said, that was a brilliant night in Liverpool. One of my top half dozen Sky Blue memories I think.

Think the Wolves match finished Bobby Parker at Coventry and he went to Carlisle shortly afterwards. Shame as he was a great product of CCFC youth setup and was on course to play for England

Just about to say the same thing. At one stage he was being hailed as the new Bobby Moore. I think it was Richards who really did him for pace for their first goal. The real BM had little pace too but presumably made up for this in ways which our Bobby couldn't.
