Thought I'd give charity work a go and done a short training course.
Passed that and was told the money I can earn etc, with bonus for targets hit.Anyway just done 2 days and what an eye opener its been.
4 of us hit the streets and had to knock doors from 3.30 to 9 .pm.But most people don't want to know, and a few slam the door in your face and look like they want to set their dog on you ! Thought I'd try to have a career change but sod this for a lark charity work is bad for your health !

I am a sales rep and the last job I had was cold calling and it was bleak and the worst job I have ever had, never again.

This job means you go door to door and Wednesday night we walked about getting soaked, but you have to carry on regardless. The group I was with were Uni students and the smiles at the start were gone by 8 oclock ! Horrible job.

Was it rspca stuff? It wasn't a company in the town centre was it? Do they also do other stuff other than charity stuff?

I've heard of a company that does it that sounds a bit like a pyramid scheme where they promise you loads of cash etc.

Must admit, it does annoy me when people randomly knock the door for charity, just doing their jobs I know.

Home fundraisers near Cov station. Do loads of charities I chose Barnados children charity. I'm a hypocrite as I dislike them knocking my door, but they sold it so well on the training,I thought I'd try it.
You're on a probationary period and if you haven't hit targets they dismiss you. That'll be me hopefully !

It is a different one then, this one did utility bill stuff too.

Did they sell you a dream to the point it sounded too good to be true? Promises of being a manager and then getting a cut of other people's commission etc?

No not really Nick. Decent hourly rate and with sign ups etc, bonus pay and plenty of hours. But you have to knock100 houses to earn decent money.

We had one knock the door the other night from the British heart foundation and my wife answered and said not interested and the guy said to her what do you know about heart problems? So she said why what do you want to know I am a coronary care nurse so he wandered off.

I knocked one door and a woman looked me up and down, saw my Barnados jacket and said " charity begins at home." She shut the door leaving me thinking I'll take that as a no then !

I should add this to the 'things that annoy you' thread, but there is NOTHING that annoys me more than having someone knock on my door or ring my bell that I don't know and wants something from me. In fact, I never answer the door to such people as that avoids the unpleasantness that would ensue.

I hate it when instead of telling you what they want or what they're selling they launch into a spiel about something totally abstract. Yesterday it was "We've been discussing energy conservation with your neighbours". Yeah, right!

If you want to feel miserable and unwanted,be a door to door fundraiser !

I'm a sucker for that sort of thing. I've subscribed to about 3 charities from door to door. I remember once buying some sad old dusters and clothes pegs from some guy who came round saying that he was disabled - he did have a card.

Best one was not door to door but when walking the dog some foreign guy was asking for money for a bed for the night. Odd area to be asking for anything like that really. He said he was £30 short. I had £20 and gave him that and he started shouting demanding another £10. Great.

Probably slept in the park with 10 cans of special brew.

Went all the way on the train to Milton Keynes today with 3 other fundraisers. When the team leader told us where to start knocking he noticed I never had my ID badge. He said you have to wear it or you can't by law knock doors.I forgot it so he rang the Cov office to ask if I could work anyway ? No was the answer,so I had to come back home a days pay light.Felt a right numpty.
This job has been one nightmare wish I'd never bothered !

It's a pity they can't invent a door that when you knock on it, it knocks back.

Lasted just under a week as I quit today. Just the thought of walking about knocking doors filled me with dread,so decided no more for me. Discovered they have loads coming in and out in a short time, mostly University students.Fair play to those who stick with it,but if a job is not for you sod it !

No point letting it get you down and dreading going to work!

Are you going to go back to what you did before?

Had a mate who got roped into this crap. Some days he lost money going to work because he didn't make any commission but had to pay transport costs to the company. Seemed like a right scam.

Fair play.

Bit mean, but this thread has cheered me up no end, just in realising I'm lucky not to do this ;)

Am always polite to chuggers, but tend not to sign up on impulse to things anyway, so I can see how it'd be soul destroying.

What made you want a change from windows anyway? Might explain why I've only ever seen my window cleaner once in two years, if they're all giving up ;)

My window cleaner charges £15 a time it's more than a £1 a minute.

Just fancied a go at something new. Realised bit old for that really ! Stick to what I'm good at now.But window cleaning has changed, customers want theirs cleaning monthly on average instead of fortnightly, and some even quarterly. You do need shops/offices and pubs etc too,but cleaning companies get most of them now. So as good a job as it is,you do need lots of work.
