I met Bobby before a Coventry v Wimbledon game a long time ago. I asked him who he wanted to win. His answer was deliberately somewhat ambiguous, however it was fairly obvious to me , he wanted Coventry to win.

Was that the Northampton season? I'd kind of let himself off a bit for that if so.
tbf to him, his passion for the club always seems obvious to me. I'll also give him a free-ish pass for his second spell as manager, if not the first.

The Friday night FA Cup game, yes may have been the Northampton season. Radio5Live he was part of the commentary team. Maybe he went on to support Arsenal in our later tie.

Have to say, his second spell. After Don Howe had a go, I was convinced we were proper doomed... but he managed to get us scoring goals, playing some attacking football. Then a bit later we got the walloping of Liverpool, and Villa. Fantastic stuff!
Can't let him off the first spell, mind (although again he came up with a team after they all buggered off!), nor the crazy way he quit, but still think that spell immediately after signing Quinn is the most fun I've had supporting CCFC.

Don't necessarily disagree with that either, although it wasn't as entertaining.
And we could have crashed completely after our inept finish under Howe, so Gould stabilised us, arguably (words not often used for him!) and his signing of Babb allowed us, indirectly, to be able to buy Dublin.

Phil Neal was a grade A nobjockey. I base that solely on the fact that he never ever referred to us as 'we' but as 'your club'. A manager who doesn't believe he is part of the team is not a manager in my eyes.

Happy birthday Bob . His record as manager stands up pretty well considering the hand he was dealt with first time round having to get together nearly a full squad when Sexton left and a lot of the best players went, kept us in the first division as well playing the right way . Points wise his record is as good as Neal's and done with an attacking outlook .

Signed most of the 87 cup winning team and manger of Wimbledon in 88 , winning the FA CUP .
Not bad for someone ( in your opinion ) is a terrible manager .

Steve Ogrizovic, Trevor Peake , Michael Gynn Brian Kilcline,,Dave Bennet, and Cyril Regis were all signed by him and played in the final Lloyd Mc Grath came through from the youth team .He also signed Stuart Pearce( whatever happened to him). Gouldy I for one salute you for what you have done for our club as player and manager.

Remrmber seeing Gould and Neal turn out for the reserves Gould looked old and knackered but Neal oozed class, if memory serves me right he played in midfield...shit manager though

Phil Neal did well to keep us competitive, before Richardson began his spending spree, with Atkinson bringing in overpriced Championship players (Paul Williams, Shaw, Daish, Salako, Richardson) and we actually got worse. Neal had virtually no money, and must be credited for bringing Dublin to the club (from the Phil Babb money). He did speak about Liverpool too much, but I thought he was a good guy, and a solid manager for us

I used to love Gould the striker, he was energetic and could take a chance. He lacked pace which prevented him playing at the top clubs after Arsenal but West Brom, Wolves, and West Ham all benefited from his prowess.
He came in as manager after the clearout and somehow managed to put together a team in the close season that were 4th in the run up to Christmas and had hammered Liverpool 4-0. A 5-1 defeat to Leicester at Filbert Street brought us down to earth and we just managed to stay up by the skin of our teeth.
That team had no right to be in the top league and credit to Gould, even if it was a season of two halves.
His next spell was much more adventurous than the Butcher/Howe side and he deserves credit for that too. I sense he was a bit petulant and threw his toys out of the pram if he didn't get his own way so he resigned.
I know he is a Coventry City supporter but I feel he is tarnished unfairly by supporters and his reputation is not a high as it should be IMO but I believe he was one of our better managers over the years. 6/10
