he was lucky it wasn't up the Mont de Chat! Glad Porte is okay!

Ha yeah...too true.

Feel for Thomas......that 2 grand tours he crashed out of during stage 9 this season......neither of them his fault.

If Froome crashes out, they may as well just cancel the tour.

I bet there is a little bit secret relief in Cavs mind that hes out injured.....

Kittels form is immense....just on another planet to the rest of them at the moment.

Popping the TV on on the workshop after my dinner......looks like a brutal finish at the summit today.....anyone blows up & they're gonna lose a shed load of time.

Shame its not on Ventoux. Bless you Tommy.

Today looks an interesting prospect.....a short punchy mountain stage ....should encourage attacks.....

really looking forward to this one....especially after yesterday.

How's the tour going at the moment? I've been so busy recently I've hardly seen a second of it.

I'd strongly recommend watching a few stages on catch-up...if you can....if they're available.

Last Sunday was pretty fucking epic. (stage 9)
Yesterday was a cracker too (stage12)
today looks very tasty.

Apart from that, its just been about Kittels immense sprint finish......5 stages to his name already.....

Isn't this business of the yellow jersey holder standing on a podium with an attractive woman either side, both of whom inevitably kiss him, a bit outdated and sexist?
Do they do that in other races or is it just the Tour de France?
In the women's races, do they have a male hunk on either side?

Yeah they do in the Moto GP, none of the kissing though.
That's just a French thing.

Mainly the main tours, it's a bit crap particularly when he could finish 20th and get the kudos like this.

Not managed to watch much of this live this year but been glued to the highlights, even got the missus interested enough to watch them! Aru messed up big time yesterday with his positioning.

Kittel has been in immense form, but I do wonder if he'd have had it so much his own way of Cav, Demare and Segan were still there.

Agree re: the ladies. Very sexist and out of date now. Much better to have someone from the local cycling club, etc.

Great to see Mollema win yesterday, great breakaway at the end and kept going which was excellent.

I think Kittel would have kept winning to be honest although the green jersey would have been more interesting. Demare I think didn't have the legs but was equally not 'well'. It was Sagan's to lose but thanks to the organisers we will never know!

Yes got it wrong a little bit yesterday, if it wasn't for the Porte incident then he could have been in a shout for GC or st least podium.

Interesting day, guttedfor Kittel he had green wrapped up. Froome needs to keep it simple and it's his now. Been impressed by Uran, doesn't have the team around him but kept going

Did anyone catch Boardmans piece on comparing the bikes from the 1980's with modern day machines.......think it was on Tuesdays highlights show?

Basically, despite all the hype (and increased costs) surrounding carbon technology, internal cable routing, flat faced spokes, carbon rims, teardrop tubing, drastic weight reduction etc etc. it all boils down to approximately 1/2 kmph faster for the same power input.....

so obviously in marathons like le tour, it makes a difference, but to your average chubby mamil trying to justifying spending several grand on a plastic bike to ride 30 miles on a sunday, its negligible.

As a rider who only rides steel......it was nice to hear:cool:

What do you ride JHFC?

I'm a skinflint so after shopping round ended up with a B-Twin Triban 500. Insanely good value for money.

Nowt wrong with that mate.....it certainly looks good value indeed......

I got 3 (and a half) bikes currently....

My everyday ride is a 501 tubed falcon from the late 1980's.....I've owned it since 1990....although its only the frame set that is that old.....it was a full re-spray & re-build a few years back.
I've got a winter hack/commuter.....1990's 531 tubed peugot frameset which is built as a single speed/fixed
My "road" bike is a 1992 Battaglin race frame (columbus steel, fillet brazed) which I've built up with all modern shiny bits.....the only thing that isn't Italian are the Japanese tyres.

If you want to make a difference up hills etc it's losing weight really. I love my bikes and I can certainly feel the difference from on old steely to my carbons. Also love my di2, the shifting is awesome on it but it's each to their own. I see people wear very expensive bibs etc which I wouldn't.

Suppose it's the same in cars etc

Oh defo each to their own Stu....I wasn't having a pop at modern bikes as such......In fact I've got my eye on a modern steely that I may treat myself too at the end of the year......it was more of a pop at some of the "all the gear, no idea" riders who are constantly spending shed loads of money on the latest gadget or upgrade.....

Boardmans old bike v new bike analysis just revealed how little real difference they make to performance.......thats not to say modern stuff cannot improve the comfort, aesthetic, ride quality etc..

Most of my stuff is off ebay. I couldn't bear to shell out big money on a bike. My first proper road bike was off someone like you mentioned. Got a Bianchi alloy framed bike from some bloke in Nuneaton complete with pump etc. Shop must have had a field day. It had been on the road once and spent the rest of the time unused on a turbo trainer (which they'd also flogged him) in the living room.
I must confess to having a carbon road bike (again off ebay) but all bar one of my mountain bikes are over 25 year old steel seeds. I can notice the difference riding my carbon bike compared to the alloy one.

I must admit I would never buy off eBay just worried about fakes and cracks etc esp buying carbon. Some just look too good to be true! Brought loads of parts however!

I suppose I have never been in the era of when steel bikes were the norm and when I got into cycling it all all carbon on the roads!

Hooray a successful breakaway finally! Mainly teams who had no wins or in the running so no chase down either.

Great ride by E Bo but was expecting a bunch sprint but he didn't need it!
