Liam O'Brien.... No 1 (1 Viewer)

I even think distribution was good on Saturday (When Vincetti was on the end of his kicks). He's certainly got the distance on his kicks! And unlike Burge, most don't end up in touch for a throw in.


But on everything else, yes, he's really does seem to be our (or at least my) number 1 choice!

What is the situation with Burge, is he injured?

It's a bit early to judge tbh, can't comment on last night, only on Notts county personally, but yes he did seem to come for balls, but he did have a couple of hesitant moments, that if they were burge people would have picked out. First half against For example seemed to start coming for the ball, only for one of our players to get a touch and he then was in no mans land. (That isn't a criticism, only pointing out that if it had been burge, it would have been said that he is hesitant.)
I hear that he had another good game last night, but will wait and see. Burge had good games, but had shit games too last season. I like burge and like the look of o'brien too, so whoever comes out on top fair enough, don't think there is a lot between the two from what I have seen so far. Either way not a position I am worried about.

Got to be number one. Miles ahead of RCC and Burge.

I only saw him on Saturday but seemed solid enough, I can't see why we gave burge a new deal though as we have now got four goalies, the only worry would be if the new bloke has poor distribution it won't get any better under oggy as he had the worst of any keeper I have seen apart from burge

I noticed that. Jodi got a bollocking off him twice. Great too see

Why have Portsmouth let him leave. He seems a great keeper at this level.

#1 for me, very unlucky with conceding 2 deflected goals last night

I remember when RCC first became the Number 1 goalkeeper: he too looked very confident, coming to collect crosses and appeared to have an air of authority. Now, he is very much a shadow of that player.

My fear is that those raw qualities have been coached out of him, in order to try to be taught how 'it should be done', by somebody who was awful at catching crosses.

I hope the same does not happen to O'Brien

yeah jones despite hsi skills is a monumental pussy. no one needs him to be another doyle but just a lil fight and tenacity would improve his game so much.

The most refreshing bit is how vocal he is, commanding and organising those around and as most keepers not afraid to tell those in front of there errors if more could be done as JJ found out last night.

Distribution is the only area that has shown the odd glitches in his game so far but early signs are good.

Looked very assured on Saturday .

I agree - when he signed I assumed he'd be first choice. Burge and RCC did not inspire confidence for much of last season and need to earn a chance. LOB has put himself in pole position and is the man in possession, it's up to him to keep it now, MR shouldn't bring back Burge when he is fit again - it's LOB's to lose for now. he has earned a run.

Yeah exactly what we have needed , just got to keep oggy away from him

Had two solid games so far. It is too early to eulogise and he will make mistakes but he has a mouth on him, seems more commanding in the goalmouth (not going to get bullied at corners) and a decent shop stopper. Hopefully will build good relationship with the back 4 inspiring confidence.

One thing I've noticed is that he talks through the game as well, constantly talking to defenders and telling them where to be.

Agreed, but we need to keep a stable back 4 in front of him, so they can build up a good understanding . Something we never did last season.

He's everything we've missed for a number of seasons now

• Commands his box
• Isn't afraid to give a bollocking or two
• Can kick with both feet - unusual feat for a footballer let alone a keeper
• Good shot stopper
• Great decision making
• Massive voice and not afraid to use it

Amongst others!

Normally I'd worry we would train these qualities out of players but I'm not sure Oggy will be brace enough to say something that may put him on the end of one of said bollockings

I think Burge is going to regret signing a new contract, I can't see him displacing O'Brien this season

Let's see how he gets on. Everybody was raving about Cook at one stage.

Because they aren't at this level

O'Brien is on a win win situation, all his saves, catches and punches will be down to him and any cock ups will be Oggys fault, so he can't really lose.
