I just read this article about the most popular baby names in England and Wales:
Olivia and Oliver were 2016's top baby names in England and Wales
Interesting that the most popular boy's name is Oliver everywhere except for the West Midlands and London where it is Muhammed.
Now I'm curious as to what process parents go through to name their children. Who has the most say, the father or mother? How do they choose?
When my wife and I named our two daughters, we approached it very logically. We bought a book on baby names. I went through it and picked my dozen favourites and my wife did the same. Then we compared the choices and then crossed off each others list those that were unacceptable. We ended up with half a dozen boy's names and half a dozen girl's names. From those we just discussed back and forth which to choose. We never ever considered the names of celebrities, royals, movie characters or what was trendy or popular with other people. When assigning middle names we used a different process where we considered other family members names.

The wife and I have always had a debate on what to call our kids. We were old school and didn't want to know what we were getting. We wouldn't know until the baby was passed to the wife and we would look ourselves.

When our 15 nearly 16 year old was on the way I said I would name the girl and she would name the boy. Took me ages to get her to like the name Sky. She got to like the name eventually. Then I dropped the bombshell. Middle name Blue or even Bleu. She said F#ck off and called her Hannah.

So then I said I would name boys she would name girls. Next one was a girl. Then just over a year later we had a boy. My turn. So I named him Connor Ciaran Francis and our surname begins with a C. At last I had a lad who would want to support our club. What choice does he have when his initials are CCFC? And yes he travels to games all over the place with me and loves it :smug:

My oldest is Holly Charlotte chosen by me and a friend at work from that great baby name book fhm 100 top women (Holly Willoughby) and Charlotte after a couple of the nurses who looked after her when first born in the first couple of weeks.

Alex Jacob who is named after my friend former city youth team goalie Alex Gott and we wanted people to call him AJ but nobody does.

Harry Thomas chosen by the kids as my daughter could say Harry and my son liked Thomas the tank engine.

My brother and I were chosen by my dad and named after drummers.

As a kindly favour to the missus I suggested our daughter have a Russian name in order for her to retain a bit of Russian identity.

Unfortunately my daughter now absolutely hates it.

I always thought Boris was quite a decent name myself to be honest.

I used to work with a guy who was really into guitars and guitar playing.
He convinced his partner to name their baby "Gibson", which I thought was not a bad name.

My son’s first and middle names are Cooper Neal Martin. Cooper due to a combination of his Mum liking the name and Stephen Cooper (legendary British hockey player) immediately coming to mind when she suggested it. The Neal Martin part is after one of the Blaze’s best ever players.

Could probably guarantee you’d never meet another lad with that name combo!
