We're walking this league: shots stats prove it (1 Viewer)

It's early days, but after 10 games we may not have the most points, but we're the only team that's had more shots and more shots on target than our opponents, and less against us, in every single game we've played. It may look this season as if no team is walking this league, but that may be because we're not looking at our own statistics. Compared to the rest, we're clearly the best. At this stage, it's way too early to be confident of promotion. But by Easter, if we continue to improve ....

Top of the Table Notts County certainly can't match our shots stats:

Coventry 3 Notts County 0 _ _ _ _ 8 (1) 11 (4) L

Tommy, you're right of course. It's the points for winning that count. But over a season, luck tends to even out. And I don't think we've been very lucky so far. Notts County were second best in attempts on goal against us, Swindon and Exeter. Yet they are above us in the table at the moment. Against Exeter they had three shots on target and won 3-0. Teams don't get lucky all season long.

Otis, I take your point. But the way some on here go on about us not being good enough even for the fourth tier (when we have a 100% record of automatic promotion from Division 4!) ignores the fact that there so far has not been a single game that we should have lost and that every game we have had plenty of chances to have won. The same can't be said for any other team in our division:

TOP OF THE LEAGUE TWO SHOTS TABLE after first 10 games

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _W_ _D_ _ L_ _ _ _ _Shots diff._ _ _ _ ‘Shots Points’ (out of 30)

1. Coventry _ _ 10_ _ 0_ _ 0_ _ +62 (+23)_ _ _ _ _ _ 30

2. Accrington_ _ 6_ _ 2_ _ 2 _ _ +41 (+21)_ _ _ _ _ _ 22

3. Luton_ _ _ _ _6 _ _1 _ _3 _ _ +33 (+8) _ _ _ _ _ _ _20

4. Exeter_ _ _ _ 6_ _ 1_ _ 3 _ _ _ -7 (+9) _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 20

5. Notts County_5_ _ 2_ _ 3 _ _ +23 (+9)_ _ _ _ _ _ _ 19

6. Mansfield _ _ 4_ _ 3_ _ 3 _ _ +13 (-5)_ _ _ _ _ _ _ 18

I haven't looked at any of the shots records of any of the other teams, but these are the current front runners and also the ones tipped for promotion.

No offence but you only have to look at a team like Liverpool to know that the amount of shots doesn’t determine how many points you will win.
We will not walk this league purely based on getting more shots on targets.
Stats are all good but as has been said, the only one that matters is wins.

Statistics don't win you league titles, it doesn't bother me if we have 1 shot on goal and win 1-0, its all about winning football matches and getting out of this division at the first attempt

Having been to all the games so far, I think we have been the best team in every game we have played. The three games we have lost could quite easily have been wins. Only the Newport game, where we really struggled to break down their defence, perhaps deserved to be a draw. All this without particularly playing well for the whole 90 minutes in any game. The defence has looked for the most part really solid. Surprisingly perhaps, the teams that have created chances, Cambridge and Swindon did so by lumping the ball into the box. In both those games we looked likely to concede and did so. Scary last 15 minutes at Swindon, when with 10 men they were making us hang on while we still looked dangerous on the break.

Surely it's not just getting out this division at the first attempt, it's getting out of this division at the first attempt in the right direction. :)

No such thing as luck. These stats show that we are controlling games but inefficient at turning that control into points.

Don't mean to be negative, it's great that we are controlling games. Robbins needs to figure out how to fix the goal scoring inefficiency and then we will be talking. I wonder if he's fixed it already by playing biamou and Nazon up front.

Yep, in some ways it is better to not be controlling games, but to be constantly scoring. You keep scoring you are more likely to win matches.

Good stats, I appreciate this sort of analysis instead of tired old cliches from fans, like you say, if we carry on maintaining these stats we will be right up there come Easter...

They are interesting stats and they show we are doing (mostly) the right things. They hint that we are making chances (although no definitively as a shot could be from anywhere!). It seems at the moment we are defending reasonably well, and making plenty of chances, we are not top probably because of our shots on target/goals ratio (conversion rate).
A more complete picture would be given by adding the goal difference and the conversion rate. The conversion rate is influenced by the quality of our strikers.
Factors over the longer term would be attrition (loss of players due to injury/transfer) along with the strength of the squad.

Tbh go back a few weeks and you'll find plenty on here not fancying The Duke and talking about him being lazy when it's now obvious that he wasn't match fit
Once he scored the first it's encouraged him to have a pop more often - the best example being the goal against Swindon on Tuesday
All strikers thrive on confidence. McNulty, Beavon and Biamou have all had numerous near misses. When the first one goes in for each of them I reckon we'll start to tear a few teams apart
It looks to me like we have goals throughout the team now and lots of young, talented and hungry guys waiting to get their chance

I thought it was more about the defence, how about checking out points gained with & without McDonald playing.

Those stats kind of put to bed the notion that we aren't scoring goals because we aren't creating enough opertunities for the strikers.
Mcnulty and Beavon, simply aren't ruthless enough as a partnership.

Just turning one extra of those shots into a goal per game would have us top and walking this league. We need a player to take the chance when it is there.

I am not your greatest sports stats fan.

There are lies, damn lies, and then there are statistics.

Quantity of chance may be one thing but quality of chance is another. To gauge the quality of chance on goal requires information from a positional framework on the pitch.

It's time for stats people to start getting their protractors and compasses out and start delivering where it matters.

Here's an example of working within a positional framework be it hereustics for another game.

It must be the way forward.

You could have one shot on goal which is your only one on target and that gets you 3 points. It's encouraging we have so many shots.

For me what is more promising is the defence. That's where winning games will come from.

I think we have created more chances in the last few games when McNulty has been out.The first few games neither Beavon or McNulty had much created for them.

This graph illustrate what you're trying to say:

"Coventry are the most dominant side overall: taking just under 13 shots per match and allowing a shade over half that in return."

OP has a point though, if these stats continue then the liklihood is we will get autos(or win league) at end of season

just as people shouldnt get carried away in september nor should they be short sighted right now either

20 shots for and only 4 against today. I'll post that updated graphic when it appears in the week sometime.

We are so dominant and very rarely look troubled. Quite an unusual feeling as a City fan, I think I could get used to this.

I've included two more teams in this updated table since they are now in the play-off positions. Like us, Wycombe have been a bit unlucky not to win more of their games, but their defence has conceded many more goals than us. Statistically, though, they could well end up in one of the top places.

How about someone putting up the stats for how wasteful we have been in front of goal? We must have the lowest amount of goals per shot and most probably most goals against per shots on target.

But whichever stats you look at I am very happy with the way we are playing. Teams will be trying to stop Duck and Jones. But we have Doyle to help protect them.

But McDonald has been the surprise for me. What a defender. Reads the game so well and he can also play. A definite to keep for next season after getting promotion.
