The BBC has comprehensively defeated ITV in the World Cup final ratings battle on Sunday evening, according to overnight viewing figures.

Coverage of Spain's victory over The Netherlands was watched by 11.56m (44.9%) on BBC One between 6.30pm and 10.30pm. A further 1.18m (4.6%) caught the game on BBC HD.

In comparison, ITV's coverage of the match attracted just 2.67m (10.4%) to ITV1, with 164k (0.6%) tuning in on ITV1 HD.

After the game, James Corden's World Cup Live averaged 1.09m (6.2%) between 10.45pm and 11.15pm.

On BBC Two, the popularity of the World Cup final meant that an episode of Top Gear saw a nearly 2m week-on-week ratings drop to 3.09m (10.8%) in the 8pm hour. However, the programme pulled in a further 977k (4.3%) when it was aired on BBC HD from 10pm.

A repeat of James May's Toy Stories took 1.57m (6.8%) for BBC Two in the 7pm hour. Documentary How To Build Britain's Secret Engineers brought in 1.03m (11.6%) on the channel from 9pm, and it was followed by Pete & Dud: The Lost Sketches, which averaged 780k (3.6%) from 10pm.

Big Brother attracted 1.5m (10.4%) to Channel 4 between 9.30pm and 10.30pm, with a further 470k (3%) watching the programme on timeshift.

Earlier on the channel, a screening of Beaches pulled in 1.11m (4.1%) between 7.15pm and 9.30pm. The film was watched by 86k (0.3%) on Channel 4 +1.

After Big Brother, Alan Carr: Chatty Man was watched by 1m (6.1%) on Channel 4 and 230k (3%) on timeshift, and a repeat of The IT Crowd brought in 360k (3.8%) and 80k (1.5%) on timeshift.

Screenings of Sleepless In Seattle and Miss Congeniality secured respective audiences of 987k (3.9%) and 1.2m (4.6%) for Five between 7pm and 11.15pm.

Overall, BBC One dominated primetime with 45.4% against ITV1's 10.4%. BBC Two came in third with 6.4%, followed by Channel 4 with 4.5% (+1: 0.5%) and Five with 4.2%.

Elsewhere, Lee Nelson's Well Good Show secured the largest multichannel audience of the night, with 1.14m (7.2%) watching the programme between 10.45pm and 11.15pm.
