We've made the shortlist along with Sunderland. If we win it'll obviously be because the voting started 15 minutes late.

You mean "city of culture"......like what derry was and hull is......

I did. I remember back then, Steve McMahon was on Talksport and was asked what had changed now that Liverpool had the title. He said the cars were no longer on bricks. The kids were putting them on encyclopaedias instead!

A city that sells out a 130 yr old part of its history deserves no such accolade.

I am totally backing the bid. This is much bigger than just Coventry City FC.

Would be great for the city of Coventry itself and that's why I am backing it. We've so much flak and shit thrown our way and been derided at every turn. Be nice to have to something positive to say about the city for once.

It would be great for the City. I dont understand why our fellow Coventrians don't take more pride in the culture of our great historic city

Probably be neck and neck until the very last minute and then Nicky Summerbee will come along and kick Coventry's bid into touch.

During Sunderland's victorious celebration parade after they will hire a helicopter and a winch and will come down here, ripping Jimmy Hill's statue from its plinth and dumping it in the river Trent on the way back up.

Well maybe, but I was up in Manchester on Wednesday and some parts of that place are beyond shitty. Quite shocling. And also I have never seen so many beggars in my life in one city centre. No word of a lie there was one every 10-15 yards. Never seen anything like it.

Is that becoming the norm for most cities these days?

the International festivals on isn't it with quite a large focus on homelessness, Maybe that's had something to do with it.
I agree though, Manchester is a dump but has a great town centre and night life. I'd hate to live there myself.

Hmmm, Swansea's not bad you know.

And tbh Coventry has enough about it - the Cathedrals, Holy Trinity's paintings, its links to mystery plays, being sent to Coventry, its role in the civil war, and then onwards to ribbon weaving, watch making, motor manufacturing, Larkin, two-tone...

There's actually quite a lot to be proud of culturally with Coventry, both physically and historically. Even if it doesn't win, it'd be nice to think that it'd encourage the council to properly fund its heritage and be proud of it.

Well said, NW. There are some lovely bits about Coventry but nearly everybody chooses to ignore them.

I love Coventry, but giving anywhere on that list the title of city of culture is stretching it a bit. Then again, if Hull got selected..........

Wtf??? The only thing it has to do with Birmingham is that people from abroad may fly in to it, & those from the N & W travel through or around it to get to Coventry!!!

    Kind of.

Danger is it's just a year that a city cares about its culture and heritage, then it reverts to stamping all over it. If it ends up with a shift in attitude however...

I'm confident it will be awarded to Swansea, they haven't had a Welsh winner yet, it will be a political decision.

If it brings a few exhibitions or shows or acts here that otherwise wouldn't have come, or exposes a few kids to more culture than they otherwise would have experienced, how can anyone be against it?

Fucks sake, if some of you lot won the lottery you'd whine about needing a bigger wallet.

So in one thread, you rubbish the city of culture and what it represents and stands for, providing
A link that tells us it's a Government gimmick to blind people's minds to the on going truth that is
Austerity.............I don't wholly disagree, but if it can create growth and hope in a particular area,
    That's fine by me.

But on another thread you're praising the Government and their continuing policies of austerity,
While demonising a man whose policies are designed to help these very people, people from
The likes of Coventry, Hull, Sunderland, Stoke on Trent etc.

It seems you're worried about these people having a little light in their lives, even if it only shines
    For a year.

Of course worth remembering that life's kicks in the bollocks affect all in differing ways.
Always fascinated me how people get to the point of living on the streets.

Yeah and funnily enough, I don't usually give money to beggars on the street, but have done so twice in the last week.

Also have to say, some of the beggars in Manchester were in such pitiful states. Really looked like they were on their last legs. :(

The safety net for many people has been removed, many of these people will already
Be suffering severe mental illness or physical disabilities, austere measures have had
A devastating affect on people's lives.
We definitely are not and never were "All in it Together"
