Not tried them but look interesting. I heard from someone that it really depends on how good the person setting the puzzles is, some of them are too easy and you're out in 5 minutes.
If you tell your mates, you're just ruining it for them surely? You don't win a prize or anything AFAIK.

It says on the FAQ to tell the Games Master if you fail to get out and want to try again later, so I'm guessing no.
