Thousands of people across Coventry will be getting active for One Big Thing 2016 and Sky Blues in the Community want to encourage local people of all ages to be a part of it.

One Big thing kicks off on Wednesday 19th October 2016. The day aims to get as many people as possible- no matter what their age or level of fitness- doing something active, either together or individually to create a united, healthy and energetic city.

One Big Thing is a partnership project between The University of Warwick, Coventry on the Move, Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust, Grapevine, Age UK Coventry, Sky Blues in the Community, Coventry Sports Foundation and Coventry Sports Trust.

Participants can do any form of physical activity that they choose and from as just 10 minutes on the day. Companies and schools will be taking part and arranging activities for their staff and students.

There’ll be a whole range of activities taking place throughout the day in many parts of the city and lots of information available to encourage and inspire everyone to take part.

Cllr Kamran Caan, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Sport at Coventry City Council, said: “One Big Thing is a great chance to encourage people in the city to get active and do more physical activity as well as enjoy it at the same time.

“The aim of the day is to get as many people active whether it’s in a sports centre, your local park or at work. It will really help people to realise that keeping fit can be fun and can help massively to improve your health and wellbeing.”

Naomi Brook, Lifestyles Project Manager for Public Health at Coventry City Council, said: “Last year almost 26,000 people took part in One Big Thing and this year will be bigger and better.

“We want the public to see that being active and healthy can be fun, is a great way to meet new people and really improves your health. Being active doesn’t have to be boring, here is an opportunity to take part in something really fun and worthwhile so we would like to encourage as many members of the public to get involved as possible.”

Participants are being encouraged to sign an online pledge where they can sign to take part in One Big Thing and also find out more information about the events taking place across the city on the day.

On Wednesday 19th October, children, teenagers and adults will all be getting active with Sky Blues in the Community through a variety of initiatives. To find out more about the activities we provide, check out the different sections of our website. Even if you are not taking part in our activities, you can still make a pledge and get active like thousands of others across Coventry.

The Pledge and further information can be found at www.coventry.gov.uk/onebigthing

Updates throughout the day will be posted on Twitter using the hastag #CovOneBigThing
