Former Premier League star and Sky Sports pundit John Salako is bankrupt.

The one-time England striker lost his fortune in a series of bad investments.

Salako, who played in the top flight for Crystal Palace, Charlton and Coventry, is the latest in a string of high-profile footballers to go bust despite their huge salaries.

And experts predict up to 100 top footballers could lose £150million between them after following poor financial advice and ploughing money into complex tax-saving schemes with investments in property, films and even diamonds.

Publicly available documents reveal dad-of-three Salako, 44, put more than £400,000 into two film firms which dissolved in 2010. His company John Salako Enterprises Limited was wound up in February by the taxman due to unpaid bills.

Salako, who lives with his *family in a £1.1million home in Surrey, petitioned for bankruptcy in a voluntary arrangement. He now works as a matchday correspondent on Sky’s Soccer Saturday programme. He said he did not wish to comment.

He is not skint, he lives in a 1.1 mill house for a start. He is just another high threshold earner that doesn't want to pay his taxes , being bankrupt will not affect him one jot.

He might live in a £1.1m house with a 1.2m mortgage!

It will affect him more than you think. He may still lose his house and any other collateral he has. A voluntary arrangement will have conditions that will affect is ability to attain credit in the future.

One other jot......The businesses that he invested in had employees that lost there jobs in 2010. Another reason for a more sympathetic view.
