Coventry City deny bid for Sheffield Wednesday's Richard Wood

Jul 4 2008 By Andy Turner

COVENTRY CITY have denied reports that they have made a £1 million bid for Sheffield Wednesday defender Richard Wood.
The Sky Blues, however, have made an inquiry for the 22-year-old centre-back whom the Owls have said is not for sale, although that snub may well be tested with a formal bid by City.
"We have made a number of inquiries for players but we have not made any bids yet," confirmed chairman Ray Ranson, who remains convinced that the Freddy Eastwood deal is dead despite desperate attempts from Wolves to keep it alive.
Molineux chiefs want to recoup their money on the 24-year-old and fear they will be saddled with the out-of-favour transfer-listed striker who is understood to be quibbling over money he is legally owed by the club.
Wanderers say the problem lies between Coventry and the player but Ranson insisted: "The only way it would be resurrected is between Freddy and Wolves, but as far as we are concerned, we are moving on."
However, Wolves remain hopeful that a deal will go through early next week when Chris Coleman returns from Austria.
City, meanwhile, are understood to have had inquiries for Chris Birchall and Gary Borrowdale, although nothing concrete at this stage.
And out-of-contract Stephen Hughes has joined Nottingham Forest for pre-season training as he tries to earn a new deal.
Manager Colin Calderwood confirmed: "He is a good solid player with good experience and, with the average age of the squad as young as it is, it is important we have one or two who have been there, seen it and done it.
"We know what Stephen is all about, so it's just an invitation for him to get started with pre-season training and have a look at where we all stand.
"It is not just an open invitation for him to come here and get fit. He has come here so we can assess him and give him the chance to put himself to the forefront of our minds.
"There were other clubs that offered him the same opportunity so I am delighted that he has chosen to come here."

I still think there's more business to be done, a right back, a striker and a winger, surely?
