er, they flatly refused to play any youth team last season and as a result were able to sign players on loan, despite being under an embargo

They're under no obligation to field a youth team, in fact it'd have been irresponsible to do so, and in any case that's nothing to do with why they were able to sign players. Apart from that though, spot on.

Weren't they on professional contracts though? Pompey just had kids who certainly weren't on pro deals, hence the dispensation. Would you want to put a load of 16 year olds up against seasoned pros? Yes, that would be irresponsible.

I see Pompey are signing players again - five or six so far this month. Is that because they have no squad or are they beginning the cycle over again?

They are out of administration so they can sign players. Fair play to them.

apparently the FL are keeping a very close eye on them and every transfer has to be authorised with strict spending limits in place. of course that only applies to the squad and they're already talking about spending on other thing such as expanding the ground which wouldn't be high on my list of priorities given they will be in L2.

was also interesting to see that 5 charges have been placed over Fratton Park, 1 by the council, 3 by the PFA and 1 by the property developer who owns the surrounding ground. I suspect he is hoping they get in the same mess and he can pick up the ground on the cheap.

Can this be closed now? It's gone on far too long with no real headway as a forum thread.

Pompey fan here. I posted this on another thread but thought I'd paste it here as well but I would like to say that I am gutted about the situation your club has found itself in.

I have been watching my team for the last 20 years and have enjoyed some very good times and some very , very bad times.

I have spent the last 4 years seeing various parties kicking the sh*t out of my beloved club and just when we thought it was dead, they kicked it some more. We're still on life support but slowly the rebuilding begins and one by one the wrongs put right.

As supporters you must unite (which I see from the comments on this site that you have already done) and take on the guys in charge who don't give a monkeys about you or the club.

I feel sick at the thought of Pompey going into liquidation so cannot imagine how you guys a feeling but just know that the football fans across the country can all see that it is the people who run the club, not the club itself who are at fault.

I sincerely hope it works out well for your guys.

    From a Pompey Fan.

    What goes around comes around!

Now as a Pompey fan I'd love to echo the sentiments of my fellow Pompey fan however I struggle to do so reading through this thread. The bitterness of a certain poster who started the whole thread as well as my own experience of going to the RICOH when our troubles were at their very worst to have money flashed and waved at us and chants of 'pay up pompey' while we got on and supported our own team on and off the field.

Now it seems as our troubles are begging to be sorted out by the passion and work of our wonderful supporters trust your club is on the brink, playing in Northampton and selling only 240 season tickets. I cant help feeling nothing but irony as i read through this thread, what goes around comes around.

Tomorrow is the start of the new season and with us selling 10,000 more season tickets than yourselves and having a sell out crowd for tomorrows game I cant help but be excited for whats ahead, promotion? Maybe, but one things for sure, you'll be in League Two next season without a ground and we'll be on the up!

Oh and to all the genuine Coventry fans who have wished us well and I know there have been many I do hope all this mess is sorted its a shame for football, Im sure you can galvanize your supporter base and pull off a similar rescue to our own.

All the best in the future

    PUP

Thanks for the well wishes. What is certain is the supporters are affected the most in any situation like this, however I would bear in mind IPWT that both clubs arrived at this horrible situation from two very different places and situations.

The two circumstances couldn't be any more different and the comments which constantly came from your own fans and manager at the time were always tunes of playing the victim. The Football League has bent over backwards persistently and broken its own rules to get you to your present position-that support is not forthcoming for us.

Unlike Portsmouth this is not the classic 'we don't have a pot to piss in' scenario but an elaborate attempt by the owners at starving ACL into submission over the Ricoh to form an exit strategy-they are not comparable. The League refused to let Chainrai maintain control of Portsmouth but happily let SISU stay in charge here-why?

yeh, i am aware that some Coventry fans were giving us stick when we were at our lowest ebbs, but so were supporters of most other clubs too and to be fair it would only have been a minority and let's face it, we can all laugh about it now (can't we?). Every club has some idiot fans.

At the end of the day, while the two situations are not identical, this is still a case of power struggles at the top hurting the fans at the bottom and no-one wants to see that.

The game stinks at the moment. I know you were close to playing at Waterlooville at one time. But it's only about 10 miles away isn't it. Your F.A. cup winning squad killed your team. Expensive wages and hangers on. I popped over to Fratton Faithful to read some of the angst that you were feeling. Our situation was caused through not investing in the team, the owners selling good quality players and leeching off the club by imposing high management charges. Not quite the same.

As far as the goading is concerned, our Northampton ground is too big for the few 'true sky blues' who are feeding SISU capital the scraps of what used to be a loyal fan base at the Ricoh. They love their club but their buying tickets for Northampton CCFC is something they may live to regret. I could see SISU selling the club and buying Northampton Town, taking all the squad with them as well. But at least we will be rid of the owners.

We are Coventry not Northampton Town.

    Good luck by the way.

I'll hold my hands up and admit to having a dig but it was aimed purely at the previous owners. I think we have got off lightly too. Far too lightly.

Situation may differ but the basics are the same, you have a Stadium you can't afford and dont fill so are losing money. What the owners of your club do is up to them not the football league, something we know too well.

And the Football League helped us ?! You mean after they let him take control twice after putting us into administration the first time?! The only reason the League managed to help in the end was because of years of lobbying from MP's, the club, fans, the trust and some blogs revealing the true extent of his past!

And how can you say the Football League haven't been lenient on you?! You got a 10 point deduction! 10 points for being liquidated without a CVA?! Leeds got 15 points deducted for coming out of administration without a CVA, you've been liquidated ffs! Should have at least been -15 if not more!

Couldn't afford yet were paying for a good 7 years until SISU initiated the boycott. The League, by sanctioning the groundshare and handing SISU back the golden share when there were other creditable bidders with better relations with ACL about, have contributed significantly to letting them destroy the club in the hope ACL eventually fold. They are entirely complicit. All I recall from the Pompey saga was Michael Appleton's persistent whining about how unfair it was for him to keep the likes of Kanu and Dave Kitson on monstrous contracts while the non footballing staff and countless local creditors were shafted. It showed total blind ignorance from all at the club.

There should have been no sanction whatsoever-this, unlike Portsmouth or Leeds, is not a case of a club failing to pay out because it can't afford to but juggling around debt to spite a stadium management company. That the League 'kindly' reduced the sanction is implicit recognition of both this and their contribution to the mess. They are wholly unfit for purpose.
