Funded by Sport England with the support of Public Health Coventry, the ‘In It Together’ project provides FREE weekly fitness and sporting activity sessions for local adult women and teenage girls in Coventry, whilst removing barriers that may have previously stopped them from taking part. Sky Blues in the Community deliver sessions in both schools and community venues across the city.

The project has had a successful first twelve months, engaging with 2,128 individuals through schools, community sessions and local events such as the “Pretty Muddy 5K”. As well as the success of the sessions, the project has created partnerships with other local organisations such as Coventry Bears (rugby) and Coventry Blitz (softball) Run Like a Girl (running), as well as golf, swimming and spin classes.

As well as engaging with women through activity sessions, one of the key features of the project is the way in which it communicates with women. Research from Sport England has shown how important it is to eliminate the barriers that often stop women from taking part in sport. The project engages local women through social media, using advice and guidance written in the kind of language they will find appealing.

Fiona, who has regularly attended the weekly sessions and been a part of the project since it began said –

“I wanted to get fit for my 50th birthday, as I wasn’t doing much exercise or making time for myself. I was made to feel welcome right from the start and now I feel so much more positive about exercise. I’ve made friends through In It Together and we now play badminton together, something I would never have done before.”

The project is now into its second year with weekly sessions taking place at community venues and schools across the city. To find out more please contact Health Coordinator Kimberley Dougherty: 024 7678 6314 or kim.dougherty@ccfc.co.uk
