Sky has launched its Sky Mobile TV app on Apple's iPad, enabling users to watch live Premier League football on the tablet computer.

Sky Mobile TV, which launched on iPhone and iPod Touch last November, offers live simulcasts of Sky News and the Sky Sports channels.

The satellite broadcaster has created a bespoke version of Sky Mobile TV to "take advantage" of the increased screen size offered by the iPad, which officially launched in the UK today, with prices starting at £429 for the 16GB Wi-Fi model.

The app also features an easy-to-use electronic programming guide to show what content is available to watch over the next 24 hours.

Subscription to Sky Mobile TV on iPad costs £6 a month for existing Sky TV and Sky Player TV customers who take the Sky Sports package.

All other customers (Sky and non-Sky) will need to pay £35 a month to access the service. However, one subscription enables the user to access Sky Mobile TV on both their iPhone and iPad.

To mark the iPad launch, Sky is offering its existing customers who take the Sky Sports pack three months free access to the service. All other customers (including non-Sky subscribers) who don't take Sky Sports will get access to the service for just one month without charge.

"With millions of iPhone and iPod Touch users already enjoying rich video services from Sky, we're delighted to once again set the pace by being one of the first UK broadcasters to embrace the iPad," said Sky's director of mobile Emma Lloyd.

"No matter where you find yourself this summer, you'll be able to keep up to date with the latest breaking news, Test match cricket, PGA golf and much more besides, with one subscription providing access across both iPhone and iPad.

"Whether it's a Sky+ HD box, games console, internet connected TV or set-top box, iPhone or iPad, Sky believes in giving customers the ultimate flexibility over how they access the content they love."

Sky also today claimed that it has registered over five million downloads of its mobile apps - Sky Mobile TV, Sky+ Remote Record, Sky News app, Sky Sports Football Score Centre and Sky Sports Cricket Score Centre - in just under 12 months.
