Football fans will soon be able to watch matches from the 2010 FIFA World Cup in 3D at selected cinemas around the UK and Ireland.

From July 2 to July 11, SuperVision Media intends to show live 3D coverage from three of the quarter-finals, both the semi-finals and the World Cup final at 3D-capable cinemas in the Vue, Odeon, Cineworld and Empire chains.

Ticket pricing for the screenings will depend on the individual cinema chains, but is expected to be similar to current 3D movie costs of around £12 per ticket.

Full details of the participating cinemas, which include venues in London, Manchester, Newcastle and Liverpool, can be found on the SuperVision website.

"If you are not lucky enough to be going to South Africa, this will be the next best experience you can have," said SuperVision Media managing director Daniel Webber.

"The quality of the production is going to be outstanding and we are delighted to be working with the likes of Arqiva and Sony to make this possible."

Under a deal with FIFA, Sony is filming 25 games from the World Cup in 3D, including the quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final.

The 3D games have been offered to broadcasters around the world, but only three networks are known to have taken them, including ESPN in America.

Sky, the only operator with an active 3D channel in the UK, does not hold any broadcast rights to the tournament, which are owned jointly by the BBC and ITV.

SuperVision will therefore be offering the only way for football fans in Britain to watch coverage of the World Cup live in 3D.
