Poll Skysports.com readers back Mourinho to be next United manager
Jose Mourinho is the overwhelming choice of skysports.com readers to replace Sir Alex Ferguson when he retires as Manchester United boss.
Fergusonthis week suggested experience would be key when appointing his successor at Old Trafford.
The 69-year-old, who has yet to give any clues when he will finally retire, feels that a young boss would not be able to cope with the pressures of managing at the Theatre of Dreams.
One name constantly linked with the United job is Real Madrid boss Mourinho and in our readers' poll more than 60 per cent (9,000 votes) make 'The Special One' their number one choice to replace the veteran Scot when the time arrives.
Everton's David Moyes received 13 per cent of the vote and Martin O'Neill 10 per cent. Former United favourites Steve Bruce and Mark Hughes received six per cent of the votes between them, while Ferguson's former right-hand man Steve McClaren picked up three per cent of votes.
Bookmakers Sky Bet agree with our readers making Mourinho the 7/2 joint favourite alongside Moyes to get the United job.
Former Aston Villa, Celtic and Leicester boss O'Neill is a 5/1 shot with former favourite Laurent Blanc, currently manager of the French national team, an 8/1 price. Further down the betting Bruce is 12/1, Hughes 14/1 and McClaren 66/1.
Sky Bet's Dale Tempest said: "Sir Alex will no doubt play a major part in who his successor will be. It's common knowledge that he has huge respect for both Moyes and Mourinho and therefore they're both the obvious favourites."
