Took up this sport about a month ago, what a fantastic game, I always thought it was a boring old mans game, I'm a convert. Looking to become a member somewhere now. I've played Allesley pitch and putt small course, Nailcote Hall & Windmill. Those last 2 courses are brilliant.

I was 15 over par at Nailcote Hall, and 28 over at the Windmill. I do worse on the longer holes as I can't seem to hit a driver straight, so I tend to stick to my Irons.

Anybody a member at any courses or recommend a place to try?

That's really good going given you've only been playing a month. I do enjoy a round but not played in 2 years, just struggle to find 4-5 hours.

That's really good going. I've been playing properly for a year, now off 21 but horribly prone to a shank. I'm a member at Nuneaton, which is usually a great course but it's got very dry at the moment and is looking a little scruffy. Played this morning and snap-hooking everything. Was painful.

Nuneaton golf course looks really good but looks like you need a good drive to get a decent score on it. I think we're going to give North Warwickshire a go next.

Going to sound like Kim Jong Il here, but I've had a hole in one as well. Done it at Allesley, no skill involved just pure fluke. :) I'm having the biggest amount of beginners luck ever.

If you can afford it Cov Finham is the best course in our area. I'm between clubs at the moment having been a member of Ullesthorpe and Finham. The Warwickshire is a cracking club too. I've heard good things about copsewood for a cheap 9 holer too. If you're looking for a game anytime I'd be more than happy to join you.

Cheers for the recommendation, It's too expensive for me to get a membership there but looks a very good course. I'll keep that in mind Rich, Will happily have a round with you, let me get better first.

I have been playing for about 8 years but hardly pick up a club now although I am going to Portugal next month for a golfing weekend with the boys!
We never joined a club, never wanted to be tied to the one course and now it's dropped in popularity you can get onto virtually any course for cheap. If you want to get serious I would recommend lessons as it is a highly technical game albeit prepare to get your game ripped up completely!

The 9 holer at copsewood is a nice little course mate but tends to spend a fair amount of the winter under water as it's built on a flood pane I think? Played it a few times and the greens were fantastic, played a fair few courses and they were among the best I've seen. Am myself a member at Brandon Wood and chose to join as I prefer it to others I've played, it's a real test from start to finish and is generally in excellent condition....love the way each hole is away from the next so none of this playing off adjacent fairways bollox you get at a lot of courses, hate waiting for somebody to play their shot off my fairway!!! Give it a try mate think you'd enjoy it

Been playing for about 5 years never scored under 100 but did get a hole in one at Carnoustie much too everyone's disgust .. I just can't take it seriously and most golfers really do .. White fields is ok but relatively flat

If you're serious about wanting some clubs, I've got my old starter set that's just gathering dust in the garage. Got a driver, 3 wood, 21 degree hybrid, 5, 6, 7, 9 iron, sand wedge and putter. You can have them for free.

Went to Stonebridge this past week. Had my worst round to date, Hit my first tee shot into the lake and it got no better from there. Ended up something like 40 over.

Ah well. Playing at Hatchford Brook next week.

Going to order myself some Benross HTX irons as well. Gave them a go and really liked them. The geezer at the shop said I had a great swing, he couldn't believe I'd only been playing for about 3 months now. :cool:

I know this isn't really golf golf like you guys.

Went to Bedworth park the other day, was trying to figure out the golf course as I always went there as a kid. It looks like it's been changed for some random frisbee golf thing?

Nice one Stu. That sounds like something I could do. I finish mid day Friday, So I could go out for the weekend. Bet it costs next to nothing as well. Where did you go mate?

Hi Marty, it sounds like you are doing pretty well for someone fairly new to the game, keep it going!

I am an average golfer, but come from a big golfing family, my great uncle, uncle, cousin, and second cousin were/are pros. My son plays, and beats me every time, but to be honest I only play to go round with him most the time.....and he is just better than me!

Re your Driver, use the winter to practice with it at a Range, and perhaps get a couple of lessons, just to get it looked over so you know where you are going wrong, and what you need to do to improve. Its a good thing to do at a Range as you have plenty of balls to practice and it doesn't matter if it goes wrong, as it will be a work in progress.

Re Courses, as Rich said Finham is good, as is Hearsall. Out of Coventry my way (Rugby) Whitefields is nice for a round, and also Lutterworth is lovely and Cosby too. If you want to feel what a Links course feels like try Kilworth as the wind blows hard across it! Avoid Rugby Golf course, its too tight and too many holes cross over each other.

The best advice I can give is play regularly, as unlike me you wont get rusty! ;)

I'm off to Marbella for 4 days to play in about a month's time, which should be good.

On the driver issue, I tend to find that mine goes wrong when I take too long of a backswing. Because it's a longer club it feels more natural to take a longer backswing, but keeping it short and rhythmic (not fast) means the shot will remain straighter. It does feel weird shortening a swing to begin with, but give it a try.

It was villamoura, there are about 10 courses within about 10 mins. It's not cheap but superb

Been putting in a bit of practice lately. Started hitting my woods really well now. Hit my 5 wood about 250 yards and it goes dead straight. both off the tee and floor. Still can't hit a driver at all straight. keep slicing it badly.

Played at Hatchford Brook in Birmingham last week. The greens are poor and there aren't really any hazards to avoid, It's a case of just hit the ball as long as possible with every shot. didn't enjoy it.

Looks like it's just you and me Rich for the 'Annual SBT Golfing Championship' funded by Nick. ;)

Hitting my driver a fair bit cleaner now, just a slight fade to the flight, slowed my swing right down and opened my stance a little. Still a way off from feeling confident in using it on a course. Hitting just under 300 yards at the range. When I try for power with it I'm still badly slicing it. any tips. I want to hit over 300 yards if possible.

Wish I took up this sport sooner, I think I could have actually been a half decent golfer.

I am a very, very, very, very average golfer.

I dream of hitting the ball 300 yards.

In fact, I dream of hitting the ball 200 yards, or even 150.

Reckon I can get about 50 yards with a wedge and about 100 with a 5 iron.

Probably the furthest I have ever hit the ball is 170 yards and I cannot use a wood or driver to save my life. Game goes completely to pot the moment I bring a big club out of my bag.
