On the cheap (11 Viewers)

I don't post on here a lot, but after today I just couldn't help myself - I had to vent some frustrations somehow.

I have sources within the club (I won't elaborate, so people can believe what I say or not), and there are some hardworking people that are really fighting a losing battle. It will come as no surprise that everything at the club is done on the cheap.

The staff structure is absolutely minimal - one marketing person, 2-3 corporate sales staff, two communications staff, couple of finance staff and that is pretty much it on the non-footballing front. There are probably non-league clubs out there that have bigger staff teams. There is no leadership and hasn't been for years. Internal communication from the top down is non-existent.

Every time someone leaves they are rarely replaced and it falls on the already stretched and undervalued staff to pick additional work up - with no thanks. If people are replaced it is done on the cheap, as has been the case with Kieran (the old communications guy) being replaced by his understudy who was originally employed on a salary of about 15k. The quality can be seen with things like wrong scores on social media, incorrect attendances tweeted out and poor errors behind the scenes. This isn't a pop at the staff member in question, but it shows what happens when you do things on the cheap. The same could be said about Venus coming in for Mowbray. Anderson hasn't been replaced and it's unlikely that the commercial director who has just left will either. Things had got that tight financially that people aren't allowed to spend a penny on anything - including things like CDs for pictures for the mascots of their special day. It sure if that is still the case, but believe it or not, it was and that is a genuine example of how things were/ are.

I find it quite frustrating reading here and seeing numerous half-hearted marches. Whilst it is great that the organisers of these are actually doing something and trying to take action, let's face it - they have no impact. How many marches have there been and what impact have they had?

For me the only way they will go is a complete boycott. I understand not everyone wants to do this or agrees with it, but none of us know their plans for the club and marches and petitions are falling on deaf ears. Either some drastic action needs to happen or we just have to accept it, ride it out and see what their end game is. Nothing else will have the desired outcome that we all so desperately want.

The football authorities will not step in, no chance. They wouldn't want to open themselves up to the risk of litigation by getting involved and at the end of the day, all football bodies have different responsibilities and areas of jurisdiction. Running of the business of a football club isn't anyone's responsibility.

We will get relegated this season and the club is drifting towards obscurity, it's desperately sad and not fair on fans. The one time that the owners have taken notice was when the fans voted with their feet in Northampton. They were pretty quick sharp to come back when it became apparent their business plan wouldn't work and they had overestimated how many people would make that journey.

The way I see it
Scenario 1 .Mass boycott next seasons season tickets , team will take a massive hit and we force action from the owners , heck maybe they will leave .
Scenario 2 .Don't mass boycott and eventually and up in scenario 1 anyway , but just drag it out over 2/3 years and be more miserable than we currently are .

I can't invest in this model anymore knowing that I won't ever get a return , for that reason , after many years of shite ....I'm done

Thanks for the insight 82. Funny, I was thinking only today that Keiran's replacement I(Laura) was useless in comparison didn't realize that she would probably only be on a fraction of his salary. I fully agree with you re the boycott. It needs to be all of us though and I can't see that happening. .

I know a chap who has some minor business links with the club, most of what has been said here has been told to me by him before. Run on a shoestring, part time and short term with no plan other than to stretch it out to the next court procedure. This cannot go on, however much of a wrench it is for fans, they need to turn the life support off, if only to kill the disease !

Can you give us a list of the non league teams who have bigger staffing size and cost, than us?

I'm surprised more staff haven't quit, but if they want to work in football then jobs at other clubs come up few and far between. They are all city fans and have a loyalty to the club, but I bet if most of them were offered work at another club, they'd take it.
Me mentioning communications stuff wasn't a dig at Laura, it just highlights the penny pinching approach and ultimately that you get what you pay for.

the OP said "probably". I would ask if there is another League One club with a leadership board of 2 members, one of whom is the manager

I have been a season ticket holder every season (apart from sixfields) since I was old enough to drive (8 seasons) - I won't renew next year.

I sacrificed a lot to pay for my ST this year as I now have a mortgage but I decided that it was worth it based on the promise of building on last years league place progress. This was clearly a lie, they had no intention of investing. Mowbray was forced to sell Vincelot just to buy a defender. I feel cheated. I won't renew.

You could look for yourself on the staff directory on non-league clubs own sites. I'm not saying there definitely are, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Comparing the staffing size and costs at CCFC would be skewed by playing staff, coaches, academy etc. which would obviously be more than all non-league teams.

Dunno why this particular penny is dropping just now? It has always been the only way to forcing a solution.
Anyway, whatever the majority decide the rest should get onside.

Thanks for pointing it out to the fans who seem to be blind to what has been going on. The plug has been out of the bath for sometime. Until someone takes responsibility the emptying spiral will continue. This isn't the football Managers Job or the director of football's job. What the club needs is a Chairman or woman who lives and breathes Coventry, determined to take us upwards again. Some Stability with a future plan would be a start. The climb up the greasy pole will be harder than the slip we have had down it.

Heard similar. A good friend of mine may or may not work as a physio or not for one of the age groups at the club or not maybe the under 21s and younger. Maybe. And purely as an example he got given a muddy old second hand training jacket with no zip when he started. With an apology as "That's all we've been given". Maybe.

Let's be honest. It's becoming a bit of an idea now because we have been beyond shit. If we were on a amazing run and sitting in second with a game in hand this idea wouldn't get the time of day.

Whilst I don't necessarily agree with a boycott or particularly enjoy us being shit, our current situation is bringing things to a head and something needs to happen to stop this seemingly endless downloads spiral of sewage.

Take out playing and football operations side, CCFC is about half the size. Balance that against the average gate of the two clubs. Not actual figures but if Walsall gate is average 5.5k and CCFC is 9.5k, we are nearly double the average attendance with a back office staff of almost 50% less

Yes, we know we need a new manager and that the board is small and we're missing a CEO, but the Op was talking about the general backroom functions - accounts, commercial, comm's, admin, etc. Given we don't run a stadium, that part isn't that dissimilar.

so its just the leadership of the club that's lacking. That might cause us a problem or two. Woolworths had plenty of people on the shop floor.

I don't disagree with that, we lack leadership of the club, leadership of the team and leadership on the pitch.

that's sad. I rang the club at 9:05am on Friday to get something sorted out after they hadn't responded to 3 different emails over the past couple of weeks..

"that's no problem, we will email you today" they said.

still waiting.
