Obviously Stoke can pay far more than us considering we're four leagues apart but can't remember a single player coming through their system in last 10-15 years (maybe even longer). Surely signing his deal with the club he's been at since 8, a club who he's already played in the first team for and a club who has a track record of bringing players through makes more sense even if CCFC can't offer as much as Stoke?

This was always going to be a problem though. CCFC have 4-5 U18s constantly playing U23s football and impressing. These Premier League clubs can take a gamble on these players with 'potential' for what is considered to them a small amount of money.

I don't blame any young lad for taking the money. I blame the FA/FL and PL for letting it happen. Football isn't just about the PL. Seems the authorities in this country have lost sight of that though.

Edit. Can't remember which club it was, but seen a story about a chairman complaining about the PL and distribution of funds. Their response was to threaten to withdraw the funding they provide. Along those lines. Their arrogance and attitude stinks, I hope the bubble bursts.

The problem is where we are as a club. The Academy staff do a great job of keeping these players here from 8-18 but after that are powerless - it's then down to the first team management and people at the top to keep them here. Unfortunately that isn't always possible.

I would advise all young players to stay at their first clubs and earn the move to a 'bigger' club. Smaller club = bigger opportunity.

Yes but at 17 - 18 if it's 300 - 400 a week or 4 or 5 grand minimum what will they do? Who can really blame them for that. Then who can blame the smaller club for not being able to match the premier league teams.

3k a week you get yourself 468k within 3 years.

That's a decent house near enough paid off etc and you are set up nicely even if you fall back into coaching on 500 a week like you say.

Totally agree!! Just putting it out there but Cov are not even offering £300 a week to the most successful U18 team in decades. Don't be too harsh on the ones that leave!!

The stupid thing is that were aren't the only club bringing kids through and I'm sure that the Coventry area isn't exclusive to producing talented footballers. If PL clubs are stupid enough not to give them their chance then they'll never know how good the kids they have are. Its easier for them to buy in than work with their own kids, but its stupid as they invest million every year into their academies and still don't seem to be getting it right.

As much as i'd like us to be playing top flight football I love the fact that we aren't in the Premier league. Its vile, rotten and bloated and I would hate to be paying to watch players going through the motions on £50k a week knowing that we'd paid their agents something similar.

We have a higher budget than Tamworth so can afford to take a punt on a couple of cheap non league players. Stoke have a higher budget than us, so can afford to take a punt on a couple of League Two players.

That was most likely the discussions around the EPPP when it was introduced. Under the old model of tribunal, Football League clubs generally got more money/better deals through the process. The PL didn't like that, and so with the assistance of the EPPP introduced a set fee framework dependent on how long someone had been at a club (all under the guise of "allowing the next elite generation to have access to elite facilities"), which FL clubs believed to be far less than they had previously been receiving. It was made clear that the FL clubs would reject the proposal until the PL insisted that if it was rejected then their TV distribution would be pulled. This obviously threatened the very livelihood of a lot of lower-league clubs, and the EPPP was approved.

I remember us signing a young lad from Doncaster back when we were an established Premier League side and Donny were just a run of the mill lower league side. Can't remember his name though, don't think he made more than 1 or 2 appearances

Was Robert Betts. Think there was a load of controversy over that and CCFC were accused of dodgy stuff. Not the only dodgy thing to happen over that period!

Sadly I don't think the PL clubs buy these players purely to progress them to the first team - most never will make it. A lot of the buys are part of a policy of player trading pure and simple. Buy in cheap and sell on with a PL premium
