City of Culture Bid (15 Viewers)

I was talking to my son as we walked across Tesco car park after the game tonight. Hard to be made even gloomier after that result and performance but what he told me made me more depressed and also annoyed. He told me that the presentation put forward by the body promoting Coventry as The City of Culture made mention of Wasps but not CCFC, CRFC, Bees or Blaze. Seemingly the only sporting club worthy of talking about in the Bid are a franchise club from London who 3 years ago had no association with Coventry. Two one hundred plus year old Coventry born and bred clubs with a history of sporting excellence are not worth a mention.
Now this might be completely wrong and if so I apologise for a thread that is wasting everyone's time. Perhaps someone who is in the know could confirm or deny what my son has been lead to believe. If it is true, it would be interesting to hear the views of those responsible as to how they could ignore the club that brought this City its single most glorious sporting and cultural moment while lauding a club that should not be here.

I was listening to someone from Hull on the radio recently. They have done really well out of their City of Culture status, millions of pounds pumped into the local economy. I hope Coventry is successful as it would be a force for good in the City. I just can't understand, if it is true, a bid which would exclude mention of great sporting tradition in CCFC and CRFC.

It's not just the other sporting clubs it doesn't focus on however.

Hopefully things change, but they're missing out a fair amount of the culture that's already there, and that desperately needs an economic boost!

Coventry certainly needs a boost though and I welcome anything like this. Just a shame Wasps are involved.

If City ever get back to the Premiership the same arseholes who are trying to airbrush us from the Citys history will be falling over themselves to give us a civic reception and glad hand the players.

Coventry has plenty of history and culture despite the cynical knockers.

It also has a proud sporting cultural history which CCFC, CRFC, Bees and many other sports clubs have been a part of for years. If they haven't been mentioned and Wasps have it is an absolute joke.

It does, but (and I'm not talking the sporting clubs of the city here!) the way established elements of the city are being hung out to dry is rather... awful IMNSHO.

If they're not careful, there'll be some big-ish parts of the cultural hub of the city that decline and fall, even if they win the city of culture bid.

They are here, and they have every legal right to be. You don't have to be happy about that, but that's reality nonetheless. Your post implies that we all ought to agree with you - obviously what's happened is far from being to CCFC's advantage, but let's face it, the real responsibility for what has happened lies principally with CCFC owners past and present.

I saw the video the other week and actually was impressed with the multi cultural content, the people on it spoke of what Coventry has given them from refugees to a Chinese jaguar Land Rover designer but the Coventry City omission was not on my radar.
I will tell you why! It's a sales video to award the city the city of culture and I fully understand why a failing fourth division side isn't sexy and a premiership winning rugby club is.

It's what Coventry does time and time again in its recent history, it never takes pride in what it has because it's had it for time, it tries to move ointo the next shiny, bright, transient thing.

And as such it loses an identity.

No they don't. They are a franchise and represent an aspect of Coventry as much as a branch of Tesco represents Coventry retailers. They have no real connection with Coventry and the only thing they're really interested in his PR to grow their income.

It'd be good to see Coventry City Council do an impact analysis of Wasps to demonstrate all the jobs and economic growth they were going to bring, it must have materialised by now. I do hope none of them are those horrible zero hours contracts that Labour are (rightly) against.

Absolutely. most of the miserable gits spend their whole lives running the place down and the other half are foreign born and have no real affinity with the place. I enjoy a trip to Cov, always have, love some of the old buildings and the history, enjoy the theatre and some of the characterful little pubs. My relatives were all from Cov and almost all of them ran it down too.

Yes, was saying the same to my mate the other week (he's one of the positive people about Cov). In the 10 years since I've moved away it has improved, but the people in Coventry have the same apathetic attitude to their city as they do to the football team.

I've took sceptics from over my way on beery tours of the City, doing a decent pub alternated by a bit of history and they've all loved it by the end of it and the likes of the motor museum, cathedral, Herbert art gallery and Guildhall all come for no charge too.

Many cities have this problem. Even the best one's. Talking about homeless, I work in Cambridge and they have a fair share of homeless people more than Coventry and its still a great city to live in though expensive like London.

I don't buy that argument. If you went to any other city in the country and asked random people in the street to name a sports team they associate with Coventry the answer would overwhelmingly be Coventry City.
