I see plenty of people furiously w@nking over potential sellouts on Saturday and getting let down that it looks like 20k.

Charlton in the division above got 14k tonight in their first leg, and do your research- look back through the years- hardly anybody ever sells out in these playoff games, and even the final at Wembley is rarely a sellout. Hull had swathes of emoty seats and that was the game to get to the Prem.

We are in league two, at the lowest ebb we’ve been in over 60 years, and arguably in our worst state ever. We’re getting crowds bigger than most in the division above, and despite a substantial amount of people boycotting games we can pull in big crowds the minute there is a glimmer of something good happening.

Even if we don’t sell 30,000 tickets, our support is loud and proud- we’ll rock Meadow Lane to the foundations next week and no matter what the crowd at the Ricoh is, we’ll make some noise alright.

A sky blue’s mix of fortitude, resilience and toughness borne of so much heartache, mixed with unwavering loyalty makes us a breed apart from the rest- our support is amazing.

So no matter what the crowd is- don’t get hung up on it, keep it in perspective and do what we do best- sing loud, sing proud and then sing some more and fire these guys home.

PUSB and be proud of who we are, what we put up with and the fact we still outshout the rest.

That’s got me thinking on two counts. Is the NOPM campaign still an actual thing? Or is it ‘NOPM As We’re Shit And I Don’t Want To Pay Good Money Watching Us Play That Dross Every Week’? (Being part of the NOPMAWSAIDWTPGMWUPTDEW is not a criticism btw).
Secondly, I’m 41 and am wondering if this is the biggest home game? It might well be. There was a semi-final of the league cup against forest that immediately sprung to mind and there must have been some relegation dog fight game we won...you might be right.

I was expecting it to be a sell out but then again I have enjoyed this season more than most in recent times. Those of us still going, and who would go in the Conference, are very much the 'hardcore' support but I would imagine that being in League 2 and on Sky mean that those who haven't been for years are unlikely to return. Either way it will be a great atmosphere!

I think the thing is we sold out a Johnson paint semi final against crewe and this game is far more important. I think it being on a Saturday night and on sky puts people off and are maybe saving there money for the potential final.

To be honest, I’m quite happy when the attendance is about 12,000-15,000.. easier parking, generally slightly less moaning and a better atmosphere than when it’s around 7,000 etc

Yes it was

We are about to comfortably record the highest gate for a league two playoff ever, with the backdrop of decades of despair and disappointment.

We are the ‘hardcore’, of course we think it should sell out, that’s the way we think, it means everything to us- but you gotta bear in mind that there are many many thousands who aren’t like us- they make decisions based on cost, glamour, immediate gratification, perceived status of opposition and all that stuff.

So to use your comparison- Crewe... £5 per ticket, potential first trip to Wembley in decades, no wasps factor = all the thousands of casual fans appear. Compare that to now- tickets way more expensive, in a division we shouldn’t even be in, just been to Wembley, on TV, the clubs troubles are even worse now than then.

Casual fans don’t go based on the ‘importance’ of the game, they go based on the ‘perceived glamour’ of the game.

Whichever way you slice it- 20k is going some for where we are now. No club has ever done it in this fixture.

One of the main positives about having parts of the stadium closed is that it improves the atmosphere massively. 15k all rammed together make much more noise than 20k spread out.

The OP is correct, play-off attendances are often not much above the league average. Expectations were way too high.

It should also be noted, that our average attendance this season is up on last term. Not many predicted that. We shouldn't be too hard on ourselves. Our gate will be the highest of the 8 play-off games in the bottom two leagues.

thats all well and good OP but we sold out a checkatrade semi final and a league game vs gillingham so i think thats why some thought it could be a 25k plus crowd.

No club in the history of the sport will have recorded a crowd for a league two playoff as big as we are about to. No club has supporters as loud & passionate in the face of adversity, and soon enough- whether its this season or next or further down the line- many thousands will reappear packing the ground out.

For now though, we are the hardy few who keep the fires burning and light up every ground we go to with noise & fervour.

History will record that no matter what, we kept going and kept supporting the club- 50/100 years from now we'll have our place in posterity as the fans who helped keep the club going through its blackest days, and by the way outsung every club we played. We should be proud, seriously f*cking proud of what we do.

Mark my words- when we do get something to get behind, this club will explode. But we will know we saw it through from start to finish. That makes me kinda proud, we should all be.

I think regardless of the attendance that we can replicate similar atmospheres to the previous Friday night game (Stevenage?) where we got behind the team all game. Larger attendances can bring nervous atmospheres which gets to the players. We ALL need to be behind the team, it’s 2 legs but let’s give us a lead going into next friday

By that logic i can say we got 30k regular in the 70s .
Most clubs had low attendances in the early 90s except a minority few .
Coventry were not a special case .
Coventry in the premier league today would pull in 27-32000 every week at home

We have the fanbase there and it’s perfectly reasonable to expect in modern day football for a club like Coventry to pull over 20,000 for a playoff game .
People in this city have demanded a team that plays decent football and competes , they get it now albeit the bottom tier but they should embrace it and support them , instead of sitting at home and waiting for a fairytale premier league return to happen.

Either way I still think the attendance will exceed 20,000 on Saturday

Ive never once (knowingly ) wanked furiously over getting 30,000 gates at the ricoh, I just want to makIf e that clear.
The fact is, although its our first ever play offs, the pull of division1 isn't really that appealing. We've been there before, its almost as cack as where we are now.
The step up really comes in division 1 play offs - there is almost a mini premiership in the championship. The difference in the size of the clubs in the Championship and division 1 is huge on the whole . If Charlton can only get 14,000 then I think that's poor, but have they still got issues with their owners, enough to put them off ? I wouldn't expect less than almost a full house at the Ricoh for that one.
