The most frustrating thing is the reporting that Mcnulty is pushing for the move. If he wants to go he should put in a transfer request and give up on his loyalty bonus instead of forcing the club's hand while pocketing all he can.

I think if he / his agent wanted to stay here they would have signed the improved contract straight away wouldn't they? The fact it hasn't been signed kind of shows they are seeing what else is about.
Fact is, he will probably triple his wage at least and probably go a good way to setting himself and family up nicely for after he retires.
It will be a blow but I think Robins will have it in mind and have replacements lined up.
If he wants to do it, it should be done now. Not like when George Thomas pissed about last season.

Why are you getting bitter? If another company offered you double the salary to do the same job would you really turn it down? That's just the sign of the times and is the make-up of football in 2018.

Agreed. Robins isn't naive enough to think that this wasn't a possibility, if not an inevitability. He'll have options already in mind.

Disappointing but not surprising. I felt we were always going to lose one of Bayliss or McNulty. It sounds as though it's the player that's pushing for the move, which if true, means there isn't an awful lot the club can do except try to get the best deal possible. True we could reject the bid and force him to stay another year but you run the risk of having a sulky, pissed off player disturbing the rest of the squad.

Yeah, there is but a move to the mighty Reading falls firmly into one of those camps. The justifications used here are all purely about money rather than ambition.

could force him to stay for 2 years - but I want players who are happy here. I get it re:£££s but in terms of the joy of playing football, he's unlikely to get at Reading what he had here. As others have said, if it;'s got to happen, let's have a couple of players coming in to push us forward. Important we keep the team spirit intact.

I'm not saying I agree that loans are definitely the solution, but Armstrong worked out pretty okay didn't it? It's like me saying 'Permanent signings? We've tried that millions of times, it didnt work out.' Plenty of Prem/Championship teams loan out players that work out. It's a risk, but to be honest most signings in League One and League Two are a risk.

Think it depends though.
In my job now I wouldn't leave because I enjoy it so if somebody said they would match my wage or give me 5 or 6 grand a year more I'd probably not be fussed. If somebody said they would triple my wage then I'd be stupid not to think about it. Mortgage would be cleared straight away and could then start to really chuck some away in a pension.

To an extent you're right. But, at the end of the day they are a Championship club and we're not. Plus, even if they suffer relegation next season they have the resources to bounce back and win promotion. Unfortunately we fall short of this as our budget is hardly 'promotion winning' is it.

Do agree with that point. Unless he plays very very well for Reading they could well find themselves in league one next season anyway.
Of course, he could yet stay..... Stranger things have happened.

Armstrong did not work out OK, we didn't go up and then had to try and find a replacement the next season. Let's also not forget that we barely won a game after Christmas and Armstrong barely scored either.

Agree - but there will be another McNulty out there, and overall we have strengthened this window. The one slight worry is that whilst our squad looks strong, it is now the area of scoring goals we now need to concentrate on. McNulty was very important to us, but hopefully so will whoever comes in to replace him. Let's remember - if we had said we would lose Marc McNulty 12 months ago (or even 9 months ago), it would have been met with a 'meh' on here.

Behave... we live In a capitalist country! I’m not Tory voter by a long shot but to criticise people for increasing their wage is rediculous.
Am I gutted McNulty is going? yes! But like it or not Reading are in a better league than us, and have been established above us for a number of years now.
Remember we’ve just been in league 2 and there is no guarantee we’ll have a home next season. McNulty who has no affiliation to us is doing what’s best for him and his career. What if he fails in League One for us? He’ll never have a shot at the championship and it’s wages again, on top of that football is ruthless... he’s two bad seasons away from us turfing him off.

Agree with that.
The one thing is that if we do take a risk on a player like McNulty then at least if he does hit the ground running then we either have a player who is in good form and has grown through the season or we have more control over selling him as he is under contract so get a bit of a return. With a loanee they could be the best player in the league but then just return to their parent club. The other option is that they are shite but we still have to play them.

Isn't Clement the sort of manager to change things around a lot. He won't get the time at Reading if he doesn't hit the ground running like last year. If he stuck with us and gave it a go then he'd have had a good record next season in a team built around his strengths and could still make the move up if we didn't get promoted. This move, i feel, will kill any chance he has of playing in the Championship regularly. One season and relegated with Reading or sold back down.
the feelings of resentment are understandable... as is the acceptance that he is doing what we suspect is the best for his family.
Id like to know the financials though, as I just dont buy into the theory that they will be tripling his wages or more... and if its literally for a couple of extra quid & more about the chance to play in championship then I would have hoped he gave us one more season to see if it could have been achieved together here .
the club will rise without him if he does go I suspect, and will certainly go on.. but it is a bit of a deflation after all the elation of late

A footballer's career is very short & McNulty is at his peak earning point right now
He did a great job for us last year even though a minority were giving him stick early on
I suspect Robins will have something lined up

The team is full of pace in contrast to last season so we will be a big attraction for the best players at this level

The gulf between wages in the Championship and League One are pretty high!

He did great last season for us but I was worried that his lack of pace might hold him back this season in league 1 with players being a bit quicker. I have trust MR to get a worthy replacement if Mcnulty should decide to go.

I did wonder if he would look to have a striker if he is changing the system, from the players we have signed it will be all about playing down the wings.

He’s on what? About 2-3k here, tripling that to 10k isn’t hard in the championship. So not beyond the realms of possibility
