Four from same family convicted after horrific Coventry child sexual abuse case that has spanned 30 years

Four convicted after child sexual abuse case that spanned 30 years

Am shocked. Have know them for years. The lad used to do a paper round for many years and sometimes the dad would help. They always used to say hello to me and could be often seen walking up and down and around Burnaby Road.

Am truly shocked. Hits home harder when it's people you know. :(

That is truly horrific. Seems like there has been some serious mistakes made along the way by authorities too. My thoughts with all of the victims.

Yeah, indeed. First reports back in 1989.

I lived in Burnaby Road from 1985 to 2010.

Always thought there was something about this family. Nowt like this, but they were always scruffy and the half brother always seemed like he could be rather aggressive, the dad too. I just assumed they were scroungers, or rogues, something like that, but it seems like it is the whole family involved. Mum, dad, son and half-brother and 3 other members of the family too.

Truly shocking and outrageous they got away with it for so long.

I wouldn't be surprised to learn that some of the perpotrators may have been abused in a similar way as those they've preyed on .
By no way wishing to demean their crimes ,but potentially is a likely driver .
What again is really tragic about this case is again authorities police and prosecutors failed the victims in the early stages here .

Yeah, agree on the perpretators. The dad was always really, really strict with the one son, the 26 year old, Nathan. Quite often I would see him telling him off in the street.

Seemed a very strict family.

Do you think the perpetrator can do his time and be rehabilitated into society as a model citizen?

From a short scan one study produced a 20% chance of re-offending .
Another a 30%chance of the perpetrator themselves being a victim, male on male I think .

Grew up on Catesby Road, just round the corner from them. Used to see the Dad every morning doing his paper round.

They were a very well known family in the area, but mainly just because of how many of them there were. Always a strange family, but no hint of anything like this.

Exactly my feelings too. Just found them slightly odd.

They're well known here in Bell Green. The dad with tattoos on his face always said hello to me, very polite and seemed to me a bit rough but friendly. The police were out on the Wood End streets in force, as residents came out in anger etc when news spread of their disgusting crimes. How on earth though did it go on so long, unbelievable.

First reported in 1989 and not investigated? WTF?! I saw something about recently about a teacher from Bedworth assaulting a child in the 80s and only just getting done for it.

Scumbags.

You can tell something isn't right with them just by looking at them. It's like something from the Hills have Eyes, bet they were all inbreeding. Hopefully the male's will get a nice reception on remand.

I'd guess it was family members they were abusing rather than kidnapping kids of the street so I hope they are well away in care and getting the help they need.

Have the women returned home on bail? They wont last long.

They tried to rent a house of my mum and dad a couple of years ago, but they tried to barter my patents down on the rent. So mum told them thanks but no thanks

I know you shouldn't judge someone on how they look, but if someone looks like a character straight from a Netflix original documentary then eyebrows need to be raised!

They all look like they're from the Avery family in Making a Murderer!

20% chance of re-offending or 20% chance of being caught re-offending?

Genuine question. Perhaps their time in prison has taught them how to become better at avoiding being caught again?
Yes that was cited in the study I read.

Sentenced today (at least some were).

Anthony Potts got life. Great result.

Hopefully he will never see the light of day again.

Thanks Wingy, I'm still not convinced.

Sex crimes and pedophilia have a lower recidivism rate than most IIRC. We don't do much research due to The nature of the crime and people don't want to "understand" though so can't really dig deeper than that.

Could be that sex offenders registers and the like remove the opportunities, could be it's often a one off crime, could be anything.

I'd rather find out and work out how we can lower that rate even more but some crimes fire off people's emotions and logic goes out the window.

That’s correct it’s in the low single figures percentage wise

Indeed.

I was speaking with a Criminologist who specialises in this area and she was telling me the same thing but as Shmmeee points out due to the abhorrent nature of the crimes this goes largely unnoticed.

Just had a similar thing happen in Huddersfield.
One lad got snared by paedophile hunters. When plod searched the family house, they found loads of indecent material on his brothers PC, and nicked him as well.
Theres obviously some sort of trigger for this kind of behaviour somewhere down the line.
Are there more paedophiles out there these days, or are the police just catching more?

It's probably always existed, the web has probably brought it to light more.

Who Grendel and you have no idea who you live and work with

Would you be happy with a convicted child sex abuser released from prison living next door to you - yes or no?

Also why would it be any different to living next to any convicted and punished criminal?

I don't get that.

I used to have a couple of lads live over the road from me. I have no doubt they had been in trouble in their lifetime, would sit outside smoking weed until the early hours and one of them got sent down for taking some pills to a festival for them all. I could spend a couple of hours speaking to them if I walked past and I know for a fact that if they saw somebody breaking into my house they would be straight over there having a word. A few of them who used to go round when they would have BBQ's etc were shady characters but all decent enough. I knew full well they were "dodgy" but had no issues with them being there (I actually quite liked the fact they would look out for us, one day we were loading up a van and all they came over to help).

How can you compare that to somebody who has been convicted for abusing a child in the manner that these people have? Especially if you have children.

I wouldn’t know and from my experience they look and act like everyone else my friend.
Well that was it with this family in the OP. They were slightly odd, but everyone I have spoken to who knew them didn't expect anything like this at all. Dodgy DVD territory at best.

Looking up and down the houses in our street right now and can pinpoint two 'dodgy' families straight off the bat.

The ones opposite most definitely are odd, but paedophiles? Would never think that of them and most of the time you just don't know what goes on in people's houses behind closed doors.

You wouldn't let them babysit though?
