Tynan asked me to post this up for him:
Most of you will know that with all that’s gone at Coventry City Football Club over the years we as staff have chosen not to post comments on social media. Ourselves and many other staff are not only employees of the football club but we are also fans of the club. We feel the same pains (and some) that fans feel but for the most part we have kept our opinions to ourselves and certainly kept them off social media platforms. We read comment after comment, rumour after rumour from so called ‘people in know’ and fellow fans who are understandably frustrated and just want to express their opinion. The trouble for us employees, who are fans also, is we see and know what goes on behind the scenes - we know the truth and the facts. However due to high emotions at times and arguments already between fellow fans we choose to stay out of it and not comment - mainly for professional reasons but also to avoid being pulled into each and every debate among fans. Some may think we have gagging orders in place - this is not the case we simply chose to remain quiet.
However now is the right time to speak up, not about what’s happened in the past but what’s happening right now to our football club.
Below we have listed a number of points that need clarifying for all fans:
All those fans calling for Dave Boddy to resign - you are so very very wrong. This situation is not Dave’s doing. Dave inherited this. Since Dave has been at the club the club has operated better off pitch, the club has engaged better with the fans, Dave has allowed staff to operate the football club like a football club, doing the things we would want see happening as fans. It could be argued that the football department has operated better since Dave has been here as well. Dave is a proper football person. If fans take the time to talk to him he’ll talk your ears off about any team, any player, any goals - even back as far as games he attended in 1942! In all seriousness Dave has been great in yet again another difficult period for the club. Several times in the last couple of months when it looked like a deal or negotiations were off with Wasps it was Dave who got the deal back on and/or got people back round the table. He has worked tirelessly on this to try his utmost to keep the club at the Ricoh. Throughout the whole season, long before negotiations started, Dave constantly called, text and emailed Wasps and the Council to get people round the table to secure a deal for the football club to play at the Ricoh. The same can be said of Stuart Cain, Wasps Managing Director, he too hasn’t given up on trying to get a deal done and kept it alive when it looked like it was off. Dave and Stuart never gave up on the deal and they still haven’t given up! So to those that are calling for Dave to resign - there are just some of the facts for you as to why he shouldn’t resign!
Once negotiations started they were never called off by either party - despite media reports to the contrary. Wasps statement on 7th June confirmed this .... “we did not halt discussions even when it emerged that the owners had filed a complaint to the European Commission.....”
Neither Wasps, SISU or CCFC have ended discussions as such yet. Yes they are stuck on some points but no party has ended discussions.
SISU’s complaint to the European Commission is not one of the sticking points in the negotiations. Wasps have moved on past that. Wasps confirm this in their statement on 7th June “.....putting aside the complaint to the European Commission....”
SISU want the club to play at the Ricoh - yes there is talk of the club having its own stadium - but until that happens SISU want the club to stay in Coventry and to play at the Ricoh. At no point did SISU instruct Dave Boddy, as CEO of CCFC, not to negotiate a deal at the Ricoh.
All associated with the club are truly devastated that we are having to play outside of Coventry – no one associated with the club ‘want’ this to happen despite some fans saying and thinking that some associated with the club do ‘want’ it to happen.
However it got to the point in negotiations where the terms presented to SISU that Wasps wanted SISU to sign up to and also sign the football club to sign up to simply was not possible by terms that were being presented.
If fans knew what these terms were they would understand and given the choice fans would not sign their club up these terms either.
While we have to deal with the reality and likelihood that CCFC will play at St Andrews next season it doesn’t have to be that way. We have the option and ability to reverse the deal with Birmingham and to go back to the Ricoh - at any point, any point now or during the season.
To reiterate no party from either Wasps, SISU or CCFC have ended discussions - they are simply stuck on some points they can’t agree on - points which could have future damage to the club and/or employees. SISU rightly so can not sign the club up to these terms.
A deal can be agreed - it just requires some logic and reasonableness applying to get the deal done.
We hope that a deal can be secured in private without further statements from Wasps, CCFC, SISU or the Council.
If we play at St Andrews we as staff and fellow fans respect whatever decision fans make whether they go or not. Ideally we want fans to go to support this great manager we have in Mark Robins but we understand if you don’t go. Please just don’t give up supporting this great club and being a Sky Blue!
If we do go to St Andrews and you do buy a season ticket the club have already decided it will be honoured at whatever price you paid should we return to the Ricoh.
This can still all change - keep the faith and let’s hope all parties can agree a deal to play at the Ricoh.
We can get through this. Stick together. We’re all Sky Blue
