It is sad that it should even have to be mentioned, let alone be a news story.

If it is true I hope it will quickly lead to others following their lead in a show of solidarity and support.

I still remember the disgraceful way Justin Fashanu was treated.

Part of me does wonder how some of their teammates, especially those brought up in far more religious countries, will react. Even though we've still got some way to go on issues like homophobia, misogny and racism compared to other places we're rather enlightened.

Just be the law of averages we must have had a few gay players by now. Does anyone really care? I'm far more concerned about someone's ability on the pitch. The only time I'd be concerned about off the field stuff is when its someone being an idiot like Hickman or someone doing something that will impact on their performance.

Is hyping it up so much not a bit counter productive? Not sure making such a big deal out of it is really the way to ensure others don't make a big deal out of it.

Going by other sports, I don't think they'd have any bother from teammates or people they know, just thick people on social media posting vomit gifs in response to anything with a rainbow or asking why there's no straight pride.

Possibly, but there is a very strong anti-gay sentiment in many African nations due to religion

Of course, but I'd be very surprised if it was the kind of thing that carried itself into dressing rooms in England at the same time.

I think it's the individual's right to come out in whatever fashion they like really. If they want to do a press conference then they should be able to do that. Because it hasn't happened before it obviously will get a lot of press attention, in fact, that's probably one of the main reasons it hasn't already happened. If somebody is prepared to come out and accept the press attention that will come with it then good on them. They're carving a path for others to follow.

I play 6 a side league on Wed nights and you get some right tossers playing against you who love nothing more than to verbally wind people up, sometimes more than playing football. I got called a fat c*** a few weeks ago (14 stone which I don't think is too bad) because I skinned this guy twice and then he hacked me down. Same bloke called one of our players a homo because he was man marking him too close. If that's 6aside on a Wed night, imagine the potential insults that could be shouted from the stands. Fair play to him for doing this.

Tbf, I reckon the dickhead was just an insecure bully, so the problem is with himself and not you or your teammates.
Which in itself is also what you mentioned re. players coming out and ignorant cunts giving them stick for it.
Problems with some societies I guess.

I don't have a problem with anyone being gay. What I can't comprehend is, why do they feel the need to tell everyone? Surely, their private sex lives are just that - private! I don't wish to go out and tell everyone what my particular fancies are. I will never understand this. I liken it to veggies and vegans. They just HAVE to tell people.

SOME people thrive on telling you they're gay. Many others don't. They do keep it private. But it also can prevent them from being themselves in public - they can't show affection towards their partner and the only way they can do that is tell people they're gay.

I'm hoping that will become less and less necessary over the coming years.

With the veggies and vegans there are also some who do try not to bang on about it, but in some cases it's a bit like having an allergy (but through choice) - you need to tell people of it in order to ensure that their needs are catered for. There are plenty who enjoy getting on their high horse about it and lecturing though.

Championship footballer is due to come out publicly on Wednesday according to the above Twitter account. A few people doubting whether this is genuine, but I hope it is and hope they get a lot of support.

Huge hurdle to jump but think it could be massive for other gay footballers.
If by support you mean a shrug of the shoulders to indicate "like - who cares?" Then I am all for that. He dons football boots & exhibits his footballing skills. Beyond that I suspect most people really don't care.
Like Folau's views on homosexuals - does he really influence anybody with his opinions/beliefs? He plays rugby (very well as it happens) but his views on homosexuals, carpentry, the price of fish or Bernard Manning really don't matter a not, nor influence me in any way whatsoever. Am I some sort of rare breed & 'different' to others or something??? I doubt I am. Their coaches should advise these people that nobody gives a shit beyond what they do in their gainful employment. Now okay, illegal activities they should get the full force of law, but we are just talking some sexual preference of their own choosing here aren't we? It impacts me as much as finding out they are diabetic, or vegan. I just don't care.

If he is aware of what is being shouted from the stands he isn't focusing on the game properly (as a former pro told me a couple years ago)
He was referring to what for him was often a cauldron of noise. You had to blot everything else out to be able to listen to your teammates calls from the other side of the pitch.

To me that individual should've been called out by everyone else on the pitch. Lambast them & they will shut up. If nobody says anything, they think the silence is endorsement of their behaviour

I'm in the same camp of those who don't think any differently when a man comes out as gay, each to their own. A gay man is completely natural to me and that must just be how I've been brought up.

I do however disagree with those who say we don't need to know, why is there is a need to make a big song and dance about it all? I think things like this need to remain in the public eye and be celebrated all at the same time until it comes to a point that it is a social norm. The pockets of people in society that are against what should now be considered a natural thing, should be made to feel like they're the odd one out in society and that's probably only achievable through continuing the conversation.

I personally don't think it's natural. Am I a bit homophobic? Possibly. But I like think I'm just a bit old school. I don't like seeing it on tv, although I don't really like public shows of affection between men and women either. Apologies if that offends, simply being honest. I'd never discriminate based on sexuality though and equally I'd never be mean to someone who was. And a footballer? Really only interested in if they can play football. Bad that it should be a thing, what people do behind closed doors is their concern.

People have been homosexual throughout the course of human history, that can't all be down to them choosing to be that way, surely? You can't put it down to the media or modern culture. There's even evidence of homosexual behaviour within the animal kingdom, their brains aren't anywhere near as developed as our own but they're still fucking each other. Even Panda's are gay.

It's definitely natural, if it was down to choice more people over the years would have just picked the option that doesn't see them persecuted, attacked and ostracised.

Agree with both of those points, sorry I should clarify when I say not natural I was quoting as that was the term used and mine out of context. To themselves, perfectly natural and certainly not a choice, just a preference. I'm talking about my preference and saying to me it seems unnatural. Guess when I'm in a hole I should stop digging, but I'm sure you're among the more sensible and level on here and you know what I mean without sensationalism.

The 'natural' thing is another huge debate I reckon. We were just like any other beast, programmed to pro-create I would have thought. Once we decided we derived pleasure from it too we started doing it whenever the urge was there? No real idea if that helped or explains the when, how or what happened with homosexuality, but don't think it is something anyone could argue 100% confidently as to how or when or why it came about. So, my take is that it is just there & a part of society. A bit like making bread - who the hell thought to go to the time & trouble experimenting to come up with that? But I just accept it & eat it anyway

You’ve mentioned your wife/partner on here a fair few times, how is it any different? It’s not like that telling someone you’re gay is going into detail about your ‘fancies’.

A Twitter user who claimed to be an anonymous Championship footballer intending to come out as gay has appeared to reverse his decision after admitting he is “not strong enough to do this”.

Having previously declared his intention to hold a press conference on Wednesday where he would reveal his identity after a series of tweets that had detailed his experiences, the user @FootballerGay posted two messages on Tuesday evening before deleting the account which had amassed more than 50,000 followers.

“I thought I was stronger. I was wrong,” read the first, quickly followed by a more detailed explanation before the account was deleted.

“Call me all the names under the sun, belittle me and ridicule me, a lot will, and I can’t change that, but I’m not strong enough to do this. Just remember that I’ve got feelings, without coming out I can’t convince anybody otherwise, but this isn’t a hoax. I wouldn’t do that.”

My fear when this account first appeared was either a hoax or it'd just keep going as some kind of hush-hush secret player, I hope their reasons are genuine.

I really hope it's not. At the time some journalist said he'd been in touch with him which made it seem more legit, but really that could just be private messaging and he's been hooked in the same.
