Well yes because you are clearly travelling at peak time it would be absurd if a nationalised industry sought to reduce prices that can be claimed back by a business expense or through a tax allowance if self employed.

I think that given a) train pricing is absurd and such poor value and b) considerably cheaper in pretty much every westernised country in the world that it needs to be a policy for the future.

Right now there is no incentive for any of us in the Midlands (and probably the rest of the UK) to get a train to London. You can drive there and pay parking, congestion, tube and it still be so much cheaper.

The last time I got the train to London the Virgin train cost me £36. It was even 1st class that included a drink and something to eat. And the Midlands are over half way.

Buy a ticket on the day and you will pay the price. But how many people have to go to London and find out that day?

Just had a look. Chose tomorrow morning. Lancaster to London. £180 on the day.

I think before its shouted down someone needs to explain why the rail fares in this country are so much higher than everywhere else in Europe. To me that suggests either someone is making a lot of money or our costs are out of control.

Those foreign rail operators are probably using their profits from investments in our rail operators to cut the price.

I will say on the ticketing front, I do use the West Coast Mainline. It's a essential element for me with travelling and the ticketing prices if you can book a few days ahead and some strange hours is pretty good.

If you have to get on the train with no advance knowledge of travel though is daylight robbery.

Let's say a years or two back I could scuttle down the line and back with a £30 return if you choose your journey carefully.

How can it be right that a return to birmingham from Nuneaton on a Saturday for a family of 4 be over 2.5 times more the cost from Coventry. Both journeys are direct and lead than 30 mins.

And they wonder why people choose not to use public transport

Because your first ticket is an off peak return and your second ticket is anytime day return. First ticket you have to get them trains the second ticket you can get any train.

Quite easy really.

Also, surely there is no 'peak' fare on a saturday, both tickets are basically the same.

I mean I think it’s a bit weird that you find an aspiration to reach a four day week unacceptable but each to their own.

As I say though, conference motions are always further left than the party manifesto because it’s purely made by membership and hasn’t been watered down by the party machinery yet. AFAIK the Tories don’t have an equivalent because they aren’t a democratic party so it’s more like taking things fringe groups have said.

On that point I agree, I won’t vote Tory for many reasons (rank incompetence mostly), but a large part is the states positions of its MPs that aren’t yet in its manifesto.

So you think a train would be costed at 4 for 1. It’s £65 by the way and I don’t think non train taxpayers should be funding 4 people to jolly to London. I’m amazed you get can there and back on 3 gallons of fuel, no congestion and free parking
