One of Sillett's final signings as I recall. I remember he wasn't great early on, but during that awful 91/92 season under Butcher and then Howe he stepped up, and was a nasty, tough center half. Frozen out by Gould unfairly I always thought. What are people's thoughts on him?

Not a great footballer for sure, certainly for the Premier League. But, like quite a few centre halves in City's history, he made up for it in commitment and effort. I suspect quite a few opponents didn't fancy him as their close companion for the afternoon! He did a job, as they say.

He would do for us in championship, though of course he's a bit old now.
Nice teeth as I recall.

If I recall correctly, we went to watch David Platt play for Crewe, but he had a poor game, but as it happened Billing played well, and we bought him instead. If only hey!

Billing (Jed to his mates) was a no nonsense, no frills centre half, who always gave 100% and although limited in ability, was generally liked by the majority of fans, (apart from Grendel as usual)

Don't know if it was general or just amongst a small group, but he somehow acquired the nickname 'Eraserhead'. I've seen the film a couple of times (it's a hard watch) and I couldn't fathom out any reference that might have applied. I could understand perfectly if he had a similar hairstyle to the main protagonist.

I remember he used to have about a 20 yard run up to hit a free kick..... straight into the wall

Remembered fondly by me for a proper punch v Wimbledon in the Simod. Was a wet cold night dreadful game and the only highlight I can remember.

I liked him. Hard as nails and gave his all. Ideally in the top league we would have had more quality but essentially he was brought in as back up, not as first choice. Initially he stepped in mostly for Killer when he started getting injuries, but must have been quite galling for him to then be behind Andy Pearce in the pecking order. He would have been ideal for our initial League 1 spell before we got relegated.

He also scored from those same freekicks. One against Plymouth away in the cup and we won 3-1. And another against Sheff Utd at their place. Won that one 3-0. Him and Sean Flynn were good friends off the pitch too. Met him a couple of times and he was a down to earth guy, no sense of a prima donna footballer (unlike the time I saw Steve Livo and Tony Dobson larking around in TSB Bank in their CCFC tracksuits).

Billing had left the club years before that win at Plymouth

Went to watch training a number of times and one of them was when Peter Billing at the club.

The players were in pairs and pinging passes about 50yards back and forth. Peter Billing hit pass after pass to his partner (think it was David Smith) and each one was inch perfect for about 15 mins. Absolutely gobsmacked by it

Sorry but that’s not the Paul Edwards I remember! I thought he was terrible. Signed to replace Downs...and unfortunately was a like-for-like replacement!

Professional footballers are light years ahead of your average Saturday/ Sunday player. Always makes me chuckle when fans quote 'such and such' is shit as a matter of fact, when they probably can't kick a ball themselves. Was hilarious at the Ricoh when they did that half time shooting into an empty net thing, and our fans were all hopeless. Most missed on their 2nd attempt from 25 yards, while the only person I saw succeed from the half way line was Dietmar Bruck, doing it for charity, when he must have been 65. I also remember before the start of this season someone posted on here, who had played in a Leamington fans game against a CCFC old boys XI, and he seemed genuinely stunned about how good Michael Doyle was, someone who many of our fans regard as being limited in terms of football talent. It is all relative I know, but these players are not shit, even Greg Downs and Paul Edwards :)

But they do have the benefit of training to teach them to be good at it every day.
