Since relegation from the Premiership ... (1 Viewer)

It's been 20 years now. You can take 2 players from the ones we've had since being relegated from the Premiership (not in their prime but as we had them at the time) to add into the current team/squad who are you taking?

I'll start off with Wise and Armstrong.

Great question! Thompson and Wilson, but there are a few others I can think of.

This is a great question. If its based on what they were like when we had them & how we try to play now then I'd go for McAllister & Adebola

Are we saying after relegation as as soon as relegation season ended, or as the start of the first season in Championship? I'm also not including loans.

If it's the former Hartson and McSheffrey (pre-Brum) because I think they'd add the most in positions we could do with improving. If not Hartson, Wilson (although Clarke would probably be a more similar style)

Plenty of others worth a mention.

Nilsson because he was great, but we've got Dabo and play wing backs and despite his fitness a mid-30's Nilsson would be knackered.

Maddison although he hadn't yet developed his full talents.

Also a few that would be decent but arguably the passing game might not be suited to them as much.

Wise because of the experience and dirty work in the middle, as well as Gunnarsson who had a much older head on his shoulders than his age suggested and had years of captaincy ahead of him.

McAllister also would give us a great option.

Similarly with Dann, who be immense, and possibly Keogh would be good replacements for Fadz.

Also Westwood who was a great allround keeper but don't know if playing out from the back would've been great for him.

1. Got to be Maddison...even as an inconsistent skinny diving 19 year old, he was capable of some sublime play & could turn a game.......I remember singing "Madderz for England"....*cringes* .....after winning 0-5 away at crewe.....

....I was very very drunk.

2. David Thompson.....not a great player but quite a prolific scorer of absolute belters from midfield.

It would surely have to be from first season in championship. Our strongest best finish... Jeez who would we need most right now.

David Thompson and Mo Konjic

No we finished 11th that season - we were doing well with not long left but Jim Smith bought in a bunch of ex Derby players

Our best Championship season was the first season at the Ricoh where we finished 8th but still a while of the play offs

I'm assuming David Thompson and the like would miss the cut off, being a Prem signing... But what it does show is that we have not had a lot of 'prime talent' in nearly 20 years!

I would rule out Wilson (just) & Maddison... Kids in L1.

The McSheffrey (technically misses out too as was part of Prem squad) who came back after his loan at Luton would probably be one.

Then it gets interesting... Safri? Davenport or Dann? Fox? Despite his age, Wise would be in the argument... Shame none of them could play alongside O'Hare (although Maddison could).

Put David Thompson from 2002 and McSheffrey from 2004 in this team would be frightening. Thats about 25 goals from Midfield and plenty of assists. If your talking about players in their peak.

Think Thompson got into England squad a few months after he left us.

Yeah best placed finish 8th was then in 2005. But more points and a plus 9 better GD in 2002 and closer to play offs

Wilson and Maddison. If I could have a third I’d go for Dann to shore up the defence.

This has got some great responses thanks. it seems Wilson and Madders are the most popular although personally the raw Madders we had was a bit lightweight (imo) for the Championship battles. Clear talent but needed that season at Aberdeen and in Norwich reserves to toughen up a little before his serious assault the following season. Wilson of course a great shout, but unfair for me to name him as I only saw him in a handful of away games that season. One of my biggest regrets about not going to Northampton.

Wise and King I think. Tempted by Madders and Wilson but I think we need a bit more nous.

Also if Wise could do for Hamer what he did for Doyle 😍😍😍

People really think a 40 year-old Dennis Wise could keep up an (admittedly impressive) 13-game stretch over an entire season, huh?

Wilson scored 20 goals in the Championship the season after he left us. He was clearly ready for this level, so it would be crazy not to pick him.

The other one surely has to be an experienced midfielder with a bit of bite. The fact that people are falling over themselves to pick the ghost of Dennis Wise shows you how few of those we've had over the years. Carsley and Safri are the only ones who come to mind, and neither one was pulling up any trees.

Yeah why not?
He was exceptionally fit and came to us from a spell of inactivity.🤔

Even Wise himself acknowledged his career was basically over by that point. We gave him the offer of another year, but he didn't want it. No-one else apparently could persuade him otherwise and he never played again.

The overhead kicks and shithousery from a name brand player were fun for a dozen games, but this idea that he's a City all-timer seems like small sample size wishful thinking to me. I have little doubt he would have gone full Lee Mills if we gave him a long-term deal.

We can only judge on what we saw. And frankly, yeah at the moment I’d take Wise for 13 games over pretty much anyone else we’ve had in that slot.

Surely the point is whether what he had could improve us right now? I think he could. In another 13 games Sheaf and Hamer could have learnt lots from him and be ready to take over the mantle. If short stints aren't a fair barometer of popularity then Robbie Keane had less than a full season too and he's rightly lauded as one of our best from the modern era.

Keane played brilliantly for us for 30 games, and more or less reproduced that at various clubs everywhere else he went in his career. What we got for those 30 games was essentially what a year of Robbie Keane gives you.

Dennis Wise had an insane run of 13 games at the twilight of his playing days where he produced at a rate that he never came close to over the entirety of his career. It was fun, but it was a total outlier, a flash in the pan, and if you replayed history, there's no way on earth he could ever do it again. Which is probably why he called it quits straight after, and why I wouldn't bet on him repeating the party trick for the purposes of this question.

Leon Clarke and Micheal Doyle physical presence upfront and and some nastiness in midfield

He turned us down because he got offered a managerial role, I think
