No I'm quite happy with the speed of thought of our other players. McFadzean is physically slow but that's not the same thing. He also made one suicide pass last night. But Sheaf gives me a panic attack at least once a game. I can see where the danger is when he gets the ball, and I am just an armchair peasant, so I'm sure Championship players can see it.

The position he plays is also an issue because his role is one of great responsibility in both building and stopping attacks. I'm quite happy with what he does defensively. He's not exactly a tiger but he does a fair job of pressing and stand up tackles, he's tall and wins a lot of headers, as has already been pointed out. But when you are playing the position which is pressed first by opposition players you need to be really switched on and decisive in what you do.

But it's not about getting on player's backs. If Ben Sheaf is reading these forum posts then I apologise sincerely if I've hurt his feelings, but I doubt he is. This is called skybluestalk, after all. He's obviously going to get better with experience, but I don't think this is the last time mistakes will be pointed out.

For the record, I also thought both of our strikers offered little last night, I thought O'Hare ran around a lot but continually miscontrolled the ball, Dabo ran up blind alleys in most of his attacks (save the last one), same for McCallum, and Hamer was extremely frustrating in his passing. But games are coming thick and fast and there is surely a lot of tiredness in there. Tired minds, tired legs, etc. No one should expect perfection at Championship level.

"Turns slower than milk" now that phrase seems to fit 'our fans opiniions on players'.

It was not that long ago Kelly was deemed to be a League 2 player not good enough for League 1. Then he was going to be too slow for the Championship.

Sheaf is still a young player and one capable of developing. A few on here seem determined to prove themselves right about players. They seem so determined to spot the mistakes they miss the good bits.

The best example of people jumping off a cliff about a player before giving him the chance he deserved was Wilson.

Agreed, it's just confirmation bias, have a certain pov and then look out for mistakes to justify it, rather than watching the whole performance

Sheaf is deployed where he will inevitably see more of the ball. Be interesting to see how much ground Allen covered compared to Sheaf...
I had high hopes for Allen last year...not really done it yet but tonight he made fewer mistakes and looked more confident. Credit him with having an improved performance.
I like Sheaf and thought he was ok tonight. He’s played better...I think he will be a very good player.
O'Hare (51) and hamer (83) were also in midfield.

I think the point is.. he's played quite a lot now.. Cant really ever remember him really looking like scoring, ever really going past a player and making something happen.
Stick to the stand up

I very rarely criticise players. In fact I usually champion players that are getting stick but I just don't see it with Sheaf. Just can't see what he offers. Doesn't unlock defences, doesn't ever look like scoring, doesn't break play. Work rate is poor. Just don't get it.

He is neither of those things nor is his role. Kelly (albeit he scored two in his last game but hadnt for over 100 games previous to that) does neither of those things. For what it's worth. Sheaf = 0.4 successful dribbles per game. Kelly 0.1 per game.

Breaking up play.
Kelly 2 interceptions per game, Sheaf 1.4.
Tackles: Kelly 1.2, Sheaf 2.1.

Creating:
Sheaf 2 big chances created, 0.6 key passes per game
Kelly 1 big chance createde, 0.6 key passes per game

Kelly pass completion 72%
Sheaf pass completion 84%

anyone clock the deliberate handball he made in the middle of the park to stop a Huddersfield attack, was quite savvy quick thinking. Hamer came over and gave him a hi-five

I recon he is an intelligent player needs games and time to sharpen up and cut out errors. We mustn't forget apart from youth football he had only played 42 games of senior football before he joined us. All for clubs in leagues 1 and 2, so its massive learning curve for him, he is doing fine.

no mate. lets crucify him early doors because that's the way to bring a player on and get them to develop an affinity for the club.

That's probably exactly why, because he is always trying to do the right thing, bring the ball down & play. Unless you think Arsenal teach their young midfield players to hoof it every time they get it?

At lower levels teams don't give you so much time on the ball, he'll get there.

How often was he caught in possession tonight?
Can think of 3 occasions. You are suggesting it’s a lot more

I swear this is all about running gait.

Kelly “feels” more like a terrier and Sheaf “feels” lackadaisical. But it’s just not true.

Quite the opposite, I can only think of one (for their shot in the first half).
I'll check stats later but can almost guarantee its less than most other players.
Ah ok. Yep definitely the one in the first half and then the one where he was fouled for their shot near the end of the game.

Couldn't agree more. Also, that wasn't aimed at a criticism of Kelly at all, just a comparison. Kelly runs around a lot and looks busy, a bit like Jim O'Brien used to. Huge caveat that Kelly's positional sense and all round game is far superior. Sheaf is more languid and less panicked which seems to make people think he doesn't care or isn't interested. As a general rule, our fan base tend to prefer all action heroes over technical ability. For what it's worth, I don't think Sheaf has been exceptionally good, more that he's not been anywhere near as bad as some have seemed to suggest.

Lanky, slim players always have to put up with this.

Having little legs is the pre internet version of being on social media: cheat code to the fans’ hearts.

Andy Morrell: legend. Leon Best: lazy
Liam Kelly: legend. Ben Sheaf: lazy
Ryan Giles: rapid. Bakayoko: lazy

Carl Baker is the only known example of breaking this rule.

He accepted Facebook friend requests so he got away with it.

Edit... Also I swear everyone used to think he was crap in the Championship. Became more popular in league 1

Still not sure how I feel about sheaf, has decent passing range and a tidy touch but really not too much else alot of the time, not aggressive enough, no pace at all, carelessly sloppy in key areas 🤷... I dont know probably wrong but just don't see it, wouldn't pay the fee at the end of the season

If we can get Ben Whiteman in to play with him

Were an excellent duo at Donny.

He takes risks with his passing which I like in a player if it is forward risks, he seems to make most of his into the defenders

Yeah, I'm currently reserving judgement on him. Am not convinced tbh, but he's not been so shoddy (and he's not played *that* many games) that it's worth writing him off, either.

Fair play. Can’t argue with those stats. Possibly a bit of the confirmation bias previously mentioned on this thread.

Have to say I can’t remember many of those supposed tens of “big chances” he’s created though

You don't actually need to make your mind up yet? You seem to be panicking and putting yourself under pressure. Rather than keep your passing short and tidy. You seem to just want to hoof your opinion forward at the first opportunity?

Sheaf does also make tackles; that challenge on the Wycombe forward who broke through and looked like he would equalise was a great bit of defensive cover. Also agree that with his unhurried languid style contrasts so much to Hamer's low centre of gravity quick bursts. that he's an easy target for 'lazy'. He is a big asset in the air for defensive situations too - cleared a few versus Huddersfield from set pieces, even though Clive credited random other players (think he called Sheaf "Hamer" at least once from a clearance)!
