I felt yesterday was a poor day to chose to bring Giles back in. It was a game when defensive solidity would be required and McCallum is better equipped for that.

However some of the previous games required a more attacking edge from the wingbacks and Giles would've been better used in those IMO. McCallum hadn't been playing to his usual high standards for some weeks.

This is speculating, but it may also be that MR has been informed Norwich will be recalling Sam and so he needs to ensure Giles gets up to speed for when that happens.

Giles has pace to burn, but when the opposition full back is equally as quick, Giles seems to go into a shell.

Giles has lots of potential but he is not sufficiently positive in my view. Too often rather than taking the defender on he passes back.

McCallum is clearly a better defender in my view and I feel braver in going forward. Giles has the potential to be really good but at the moment McCallum is much better.

Cant believe that. My main issue with McCallum is he’s too defensive and always checking back rather than driving forward like Dabo.

We obviously see different things but even last night Giles frustrated me a few times by not going forward and McCallum in the short time he was on got into some good forward positions.

Yeah, sorry disbelief was how differently people can see the game, you might be right. I wasn’t impressed with Giles, but I’ve not been impressed with our left side at all other than the first few games when Giles was our only threat.

Giles has some good qualities but is miles from the finished article
Other clubs in the division have worked him out and he doesn't know enough about the game to overcome how they play against him
I was amazed to see Wolves give him a four and a half year deal this month

Mcallum has been brilliant for this club in both stints.

Giles has edge attacking perhaps yet hardly shows it.

I agree with this and was very surprised by the Wolves contract. He may come good and has some real strengths but seems too timid to me at the moment.

McCallum is really underrated in my view. I think we missed him badly last night.

At the present time McCallum is very strong defensively and decent going forwards (when given licence to do so).

Giles is poor defensively and decent going forwards.

McCallum currently the better LWB of the two.

There aren't many players who an drive forward as well as Dabo, certainly not like he did last night.

The most encouraging thing about last night was Fankaty looking back to normal. He will improve us enormously if he can maintain his 'old' self. Giles was up against perhaps their best player and, for me, decided too early in the game, that he couldn't get the better of him - particularly going down the line. His plan B (aside from going back to his own goal) is occasionally drifting infield on a mazy dribble, but he didn't attempt that too often either,

Is he? I've watched most games this season and I've been less than impressed with McCallum's forward play. He's far too defensively minded for the system we play in my opinion. That being said, I don't think Giles is always the miracle answer though as he's almost too direct for his own good and is weaker defensively. He's very one dimensional when going forward and has little variation to his forward play. As other posters have mentioned I think he's quite easy to figure out.

He was up against a quick right back last
Might but yes he looked predictable show him inside on his right and he always turns back 🤷🏻‍♂️

I may be wrong but without checking the line ups for the games Sam taking the shirt from Giles coincided with us going defensive (and unbeaten). I presume his apparent his reluctance to bomb on or even cross the half way line is management instructions rather than choice. He was great going forward last season and also poses a goal threat when he cuts inside.

Well, with respect, they must see something in him that you don’t, because four and a half years is some statement of their belief in him. And I do think he’s the only player we have who can run past a player. He’s not getting game time because McCallum’s taller, therefore better in the air, and perhaps better defensively, although I think his form has been patchy. We’ve missed Giles’s pace, we don’t have much of that in the team.

Giles praise is beginning to remind me of Ryan Haynes early praise . sadly Haynes has scored more goals to date to justify it!
Haynes scored a cracker last week.

Honestly I do not think Glles best position is left wing back he is just not strong enough defensively he needs to be further up the pitch either as winger in a 4-4-2 or just behind the one striker if playing 3-4-2-1.

I would like us somehow to get both McCallum and Giles in our best xi.

Yeah I agree. He should have come on as a sun multiple times.

Not a bad goal though was it Grendel - how many has Giles got?

I am being a bit playful in that of course Giles is superior to Haynes - but he does remind me a bit of him flattering to deceive and at the moment of truth final ball/shot he is pretty woeful currently - he has youth on his side so will hopefully improve but I do worry for him those killer balls/finishing comes a lot from instinct rather than coaching and I am not quite sure he has it time will tell,

The fact he has been offered a five year contract at Wolves could mean they see him as a star for the future - or that they are unsure and it is good business sense form them in that they want a fee for him if they do let him go.

One of my mates is a Derby fan. Told me about two weeks ago he reckons Bielik is the best player in the league.

Not surprised with Dabo being on there. Some of his runs are insane. Does sometimes feel like he is wasted in a defensive position.

He’s wasted in a back four. With wingbacks him and Giles/McCallum are our biggest outlet (which is why we need an AM).
