James Obrien had an interesting caller today into his radio show. It was an American woman living in the U.K. and she was talking about the Central Park five. Short of it it was five men who just happened to be black and espanic and in the vicinity when a woman jogger was raped, they were arrested and wrongly convicted of her rape. Donald Trump then took out full page adds in New York papers calling for them to face the death penalty. Six years later their conviction was quashed and they were freed when a serial rapist confessed to the crime and the dna evidence confirmed he was definitely the rapist (not sure why the DNA evidence didn’t clear the 5 men in the first place). Anyhow, Trump was asked at the time of given that the actual perpetrator had now been caught did he regret taking out the adverts. His response was no, he didn’t care that they’d been cleared beyond any doubt, he didn’t care that the actual perpetrator had confessed and the DNA evidence 100% confirmed it, he’d declared them guilty and they were guilty and they should still be receiving the death penalty. That’s a very very dangerous man. Even in the light of irrefutable evidence that he was wrong he can’t bring himself to admit that he was wrong. Which explains the events over the last couple of months. The guy is a psychopath.

Appreciate a little off subject but there’s a great doc called Central Park Five (used to be Netflix, not sure now) and then drama adaptation, When They See Us (Netflix) about that. Frightening

I read the victims autobiography, I am the Central park jogger. An incredibly brave woman. She deserved better than innocent men being fitted up and their story superceeding hers.
Trump was hugely responsible for that.

Trump the man is beaten but thrashing around like a Marlin on the end of a line, the trouble for America is that 70 million plus voted for the myth and would again tomorrow, they need to destroy the myth or Trump mark 2 will be waiting to mobilise the troops in 4 years.

Talks that Trump is going to attempt to pardon himself. Never been attempted before but apparently is possibly doable due to the wording of the constitution. Just when you think things can’t get any crazier.

Can only pardon himself for Federal crimes, NY AG is going to get him still

It would end up at the Supreme Court as Constitution doesn't specifically address self-pardon. Nixon was advised he couldn't self-pardon. Trump is convinced he can because no-one is brave enough to tell he can't.
This is now a Conservative court with strong Constitutionalists. Recent rulings backed the rule of democracy and did allow a President's finances to be investigated by Congress. As traditionalists may be focused more on the long-term role of Presidency than any pandering to Trump.
Does seem to have burnt his bridges with resigning and letting Pence pardon him.

I am here to deliver this message on behalf of the entire White House. Let me be clear. The violence we saw yesterday at our nation’s capitol was appalling reprehensible and antithetical to the American way. We condemn it, the president and this administration, in the strongest possible terms. It is unacceptable and those that broke the law should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

I stood here at this podium, the day after a historic church burned, amid violent riots and I said this, ‘The First Amendment guarantees the right of the people to peaceably assemble. What we saw last night in Washington and across the country was not that.” End quote.

Make no mistake, what we saw yesterday afternoon in the halls of our Capitol likewise was not that. We grieve for the loss of life and those injured. And we hold them in our prayers and close to our hearts at this time. We thank our valiant law enforcement officers who are true American heroes.

What we saw yesterday was a group of violent rioters undermining the legitimate first amendment rights of the many thousands who came to peacefully have their voices heard in our nation’s capitol.

Those who violently besieged our Capitol are the opposite of everything this administration stands for. The core value of our administration is the idea that all citizens have the right to live in safety peace and freedom.

Those who are working in this building are working to ensure an orderly transition of power. Now it is time for America to unite to come together to reject the violence that we have seen. We are one American people, under God. Thank you.

See something like that needs an explanation of what Trump senior and junior meant when they said go and storm the capital in strength.
We wouldn’t believe her but she could at least say they were just words and he didn’t mean for people to act violently. She could have added they weren’t loved and weren’t patriots but terrorists at the heart of the capital

Is that why they assassinated foreigners in their own country?

How politicians for one of the most powerful counties in the world still seriously reference “god” in official speeches is beyond me. Absolute madness

So Trump has finally accepted defeat. Can’t help but feel that the rioting is the first time Trump hasn’t been able to ignore the consequences of his actions.

Sounds to me like he's got what he wanted. Immunity from prosecution. Let's see what happens once he's out of the White House.

Ulterior motive somewhere. Possibly threat of more damaging senior resignations? Realization he could be legally liable for his actions?

All these desertions whilst hardcore loyalists gather in the White House with a floundering leader does seem to have a historic comparison - a certain bunker in 1945?

Again. Explain what you meant. Or take responsibility.

it shouldn’t be allowed to make contradictory statements without explaining them
Either take responsibility for it and stand by your comments

or

Explain people misunderstood his words and he’s ashamed of what supporters did in his name.
And finally apologise ffs. To the family of the lady shot and more to the family of the police officer murdered

I was thinking this. The few followers still clinging to belief in a victory that was never going to happen months before because they have completely bought into the personality cult. And just like that man in 1945, this one deep down knew the game was up already.

He has probably been told say this or we’ll kick you out early and throw you in a cell. He could have used his last months to bring the troops home, force through a $2000 cheque and maybe even some healthcare. Instead he has spent it confirming himself as the worst president in living memory, perhaps Herbert Hoover could barely rival him.
