I can't comment on the game as I didn't watch but the reactions are funny. If we'd have won that game in that style it would be 'great battling victory' or 'sign of a good team playing poorly and winning'.

Mate. There’s shithousery and there’s that disgrace. Not seen tactics like that in years. It’s wasnt battling it was outright cheating. Diving, pretending to be hit in the face, rotating professional fouls.

Sounds like we played well and players like Maatsen, and Hamer looked a lot better than last week. We will win games this season in the same manor we lost today

Robins needs to be screaming at Waghorn to take that. It's cost us which is a real shame. An away point would represent a good start, losing to a team as crap as Barnsley this early is never nice.

Unless of course Robins wanted Victor to take it

If we take our chances tho do you agree we are out of sight by half time ?

Did you watch the match ? We missed chance after chance first half we should of been out of sight
Yes I did. We missed chances, and we should have won. But to say the opposition played no part in that is pure fantasy. Their entire game is about disrupting the other team and preventing them from playing their game (high press anyone?). It worked for them today, and on many other days. I get why they do it, just glad we don’t.

Yes, we need to be able to deal with teams like that, but I still think if we play like we did today every week we will be fine. How many games last season did we think that we just didn’t turn up? We did today, it just didn’t happen for us. We’ll be fine, today was a blip.

My order of penalty takers:

1. Waghorn
2. Godden
3. Hamer
4. Walker
5. Gyokeres

I like Gyokeres but he doesn't have the experience or technique for high pressure penalties. He's got attributes that can be worked with but I think we can all agree he lacks in skill and ruthlessness and should NOT be taking last minute penalties.

no but I don’t go in for this “might have been” stuff- played well but ultimately failed, we only had one shot on target
No I agree we can’t ‘almost get a result’ every week. I just think we will win more than we lose if we play like that. I’m not getting doom and gloom from that game ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Would you have made this post if he’d scored?

It was a very even first half, with Barnsley scoring a good goal out of nowhere.

The second half was us attacking but not creating many real chances and Barnsley using every trick in the book to stop us. 8 yellow cards only because the ref was lenient. O'Hare bore the brunt of it obviously, but every time we got on the overlap our player was tugged down, tripped or pushed over. O'Hare missed two decent openings (one in the first half), but he was pushed over in the area as he tried to get the second chance away - the ref missed that one completely.

Our penalty was another hacking down, this time in the area, but after the five minutes of protesting and shoving from Barnsley's defence, Gyokeres stepped up, looked nervous, and pushed a weak penalty towards the keeper's dive. A penalty kick lacking conviction, even down to his jaunty run-up.

O'Hare got booked for losing his cool near the end. Yet another shove as he was streaking away down the right. He stood up and remonstrated with Kitching. All Barnsley's players then piled in, including their 'keeper.

Hardly saw Waghorn do anything meaningful at all; Clarke-Salter looked impressive when he came on; Maatsen better than last week; Hamer dodgy but lively; Moore had nothing to do except concede the goal; Allen very peppy when he came on; Dabo good but kept getting bogged down; Gyokeres physical but not purposeful enough; Sheaf anonymous, but that may have been a good sign actually; defence fine overall.

In summary, until we can start creating and taking more chances, that sort of rough-house team will beat us. (Edit: I now prefer 'rough-house' to 'disgraceful' because exaggeration does no one any favours)

Positives:
1) Ian already better than last week
2) Confirmed Walker brings a lot to the attack and more evidence he should start
3) Hamer much improved especially 2nd half
4) Moore looking a definitive upgrade
5) JCS looked very good in his 20 minute cameo

I'm not too despondent.
We played OK, made chances, should've come away with something and really i shouldnt be on the bus home Ishould be heading to Barnsley police station to bail out a mate who got away with some silliness but for a benovelonet steward.
Sounds like your mate got away with a yellow card, when it should have been a straight red.

Par for the course in Barnsley it would appear.

If we play like that this season we won't be worrying about relegation.
Early season , we will only get better ..

It's always shit to not score your penalties , but the team put in a good shift there and I've come away optimistic about the season

Gyokres is a striker. The only one we have that has scored this season and on pitch

I wholeheartedly agree waghorn shoukd have taken it but stop acting like it's obvious gyokres was a bad penalty taker and one of the worst on swuad

Frustration is to be expected but don't post dumb shit

We seriously lack a leader in CM to take control. Think Robins is making a mistake if he doesn’t recruit someone with experience by the end of the window.

JCS needs to come in. We need more pace at the back. Hyam needs to give way.

Again we lack creativity in the final third, but the reality is Barnsley do a press on us and just foul the crap out us. It works. This won’t happen in every game. Very reason Robins protected Jones and didn’t bring him on. Although we could have done with some Direct attacking play.

A point was there for the taking but you have to question why Waghorn didn’t take that. He’s a set piece specialist. Wolves goal was conviction.

Anyway, plenty to learn from the game and good to see Ian getting better and better.
