I want to see Walker starting next to a fit Viktor. Think they'd work well.

Using opta data , this is the players performances based on all the metrics used godden v Walker, Walker v waghorn .

Now let's imagine the club have other data that isn't available to us (which they do ) miles covered, presses etc ..

They make the decisions they do mostly because they rely on the data , we sign players based on the data too

I do think from a squad perspective Walker and Godden are too similar, I’d have kept Walker as the younger of the two but Godden getting a new deal suggests it’ll be Walker to make way.

I also think people are overplaying Goddens contributions. First half vs Fulham he was more anonymous than Walker has ever been, then played a blinder after his goal second half. Like so many of our players they’re both just missing one or two elements to make them top Championship players: Walkers hold up play and Goddens pace.

How can Waghorn have a higher attacking rating than Walker when he has only scored once in way less game time?

Horses for courses imo.
All 4 are very decent strikers at this level & offer different things.

Harsh on Walker possibly yes but can understand the Godden selection. He runs the channels better than Walker & also helps defensively when playing against a system that utilises wingers.

Good analysis piece this & highlights how we often ask the strikers to defend against full backs to prevent a 2v1 against our wing-backs. Godden is very good at this.

A brilliant article.

we played well enough in the first half against Preston and dominated blackburn in the second and should have won

against Derby we were poor in the second half

Don't disagree & this is kind of what I was trying to allude to previously.

It's not that Godden is better than Walker or Robins has favourites just that on Saturday, knowing how Derby lineup, it was decided Godden would be more suitable for the way we wanted to play & to also counter what they were likely to do.
If Derby played 3 at the back I think there's a strong chance Walker would have kept his place.

Think a fit Godden is marginally ahead of Walker in terms of experience and the number of times he has played with our longer term players. Walkers time will come. Think Walker will always score goals but not necessarily contribute as much as Godden overall at present.

Robins plays with the forwards defending from the front. Walker either cannot or won’t do that in my opinion. Until he adds that to his game he won’t be a regular I’m afraid.

Did you go to either if Blackburn or Preston by any chance? (Not a pop just interested) It's certainly not natural to his game but Preston in particular he was doing more than his fair share of work "defending from the front".

Ok another note. I think it's overstated this defending front the front especially with Walker, simply because the likes of Godden and Waghorn are willing to chase down lost causes or sacrifice positional awareness in the hope of forcing a mistake (which is great at certain times and is a valid tactic with plenty of joy against Fulham). Walker doesn't do that as often, but he he adds a different dynamic and looks a threat. How many times have we seen it in recent seasons where one of our strikers is isolated, or only one person in the box to attacks a cross etc. Walker is far better at saving his energy for what he is on the pitch for, scoring goals, yes it's a team sport and certain games will dictate that we need wags or Godden but Walker is more than deserving of a starting place at this level for me.

Just to add onto this, the fact that our attacking players have to do so much defensive work I think counts against them at times ( I completely support pressure from the front it's the right way to play, and suits us to the ground). Particularly O'Hare who I think would potentially have a far better attacking output if he wasn't having to bust a gut constantly, which although is a massive positive to his game, is only naturally going to slow his decision making through fatigue. It seems at times that if he was just a split second faster in the head he would score/assist far more often. That's based on nothing but an opinion but interesting to see what people think.

I think this is the reason people accuse Walker of being lazy because of the play styles of our other 3 first team strikers, there is a reason he scored 8 last season (because he is a good striker)

Agree with a lot of this.

Walker was excellent at Preston particularly, his all around game was essential to the way we tried to play. When we went direct he won a lot of aerial duels & flick ons for Gyökeres, his hold up play was very good enabling us to get up the field & he even contributed in our own box defensively with 2 clearances & 1 block from set pieces.
I had the Preston commentary on with my iFollow & they were waxing lyrical about him all game wishing they had a similar player.

I think he performs that role better than Godden, think back to Millwall away, Godden was anonymous. As mentioned before, Godden is better in other areas though such as working the channels, closing down opposition fullbacks etc. so I really don't have a problem with choosing between them depending on the opposition & our game plan.
Great options to have.

Yep exactly. The other issue is that people seem to get very set in their first opinions. I have written off much of last season with regards to Walker since he was never really fit at least for prolonged periods and yet still scored 8 goals.
Against Preston he impressed as you say with his all round game, just a shame the rest of the team couldn't match him with performance levels.

Was busy yesterday so didn't read any of the match thread. How did Godden do bar the goal?

I've always said he's a class player so was great to see him get on the scoresheet again.

I thought him and vik were 2 of our better players .

I thought Walker looked quite sharp when he came on too
