City ask for £2m

Reports in todays Daily Mail are claiming that Wigan have made an enquiry for Coventry City's 26 year old Irish international goal keeper Kieren Westwood whose contract with the Sky Blues expires in the summer.
The report claims that Coventry have put a £2m price tag on Westwood who is widely regarded as the best goal keeper playing outside of the Premier league and according to QPR manager Neil Warnock, better than many current Premiership goalkeepers.

Wigan have been linked with a move for Westwood for most of the season who they want to replace the injury prone former Coventry 'keeper Chris Kirkland. Kirkland is the current number two 'keeper at Wigan having been displaced by Ali Al-Habsim who is on loan from Bolton and may return to his parent club at the end of the season.

Wigan are currently struggling to maintain their Premier League status and are in the bottom three, so if Westwood does move to Wigan, he could find himself playing in the Championship again next season.

True, it just seems so unvalued though!

According to the Telegraph website national speculation is that Wigan have offered £1million

I don't think he'll go to Wigan.

Just seen this on Sky. I'm resigned to to the fact that Westwood will eventually go, but when he does go i want him to go to a comfortable premiership team. And as mentioned Wigan are likely to get relegated this season. I mean look at Arsenal, there begging for a class goalie, and I believe Westwood would be a success there, thats how highly I rate him.

Considering Pienaar only went for about £3.5m, I'd say £2m is very good indeed. If we were pushing for promotion I'd say keep him as he is so vital to getting wins. As we are mid table then we might as well let him go. Wigan, however, would not be a great move for Westwood personally.

I would of thought that if Westwood was to leave us then he'd go to a team with bigger ambitions than Wigan who don't look likely to stay up. It would make more sense to re-sign for us than to move there. However, if he is to leave then id rather take the money now than wait and let him go for nothing.

I think we may as well cash in if he is going anyway.

We just need to make sure we have a replacement ready!

Yeah £2m is a lot more than we're gonna get for him in the summer, still i'd prefer to be £2m out of pocket and still have Westwood. Although with Doyle going it's released funds for wages for a decent keeper. Once Ben Turner's back hopefully it'll boost our defense so we won't need an amazing keeper...

I'm really mixed on this issue. I want City to have a top class keeper but also I want to have money available for Aidy to spend on something half useful further up the pitch. I am more worried by the fact that Westwood has to make half a dozen top class saves every 20 minutes because of the donoughts in front of him. Granted Ben will be back soon but if I remember its not so long ago that many of the 'faithful' were roasting him for not being good enough - the lad has come on leaps and bounds this season.

I say sell Westwood for as much as we can get now but please please please buy some outfield players who can not only get us out of this non-winning run but who we can build on for next season - if we can do that then any half decent keeper would keep me happy.

Hope this isn't too controversial a first post? :p

not controversial but definetly a good read :)

If he leaves I would like the money to be invested in another keeper with alot of potential
(Joe Murphy Scunthorpe) would be ideal as his current wages won't be very high and hopefully he can be persuaded to join.

anyone think by off loading doyle use the money to try and persuade westie to stay?

i was thinking the same thing but im not sure its about the money with westy. i think he would stay if he thought the club was going somewhere making more of a push for promotion.

maybe we could convince gunners agent and get him sign with more money though.

Mate the young polish goalkeeper they hav at arsenals only 21 and I'd say as good as westwood now...that's why wengers never bought another keeper cus he's been training him up.
