With the talk of Kane going and Bidwell clearly looking better at LCB than LWB, and of course the expectation of Waghorn and Walker going, leaving just 2 strikers in Gyok and Godden, can anyone else see a shape change next season?

When we played the box again this year it was pretty successful wasnt it?

If we can get in someone in the mould of Tom Lawrence to play alongside O'Hare behind Gyok, cpuld it work? Or will Robins stick to what he knows in the 3 4 1 2 set up?

I expect he will mix it up again depending on the opposition and how they set up. He will try and have enough decent options for the box formation and also for when he want to play two up top

Yeah I’d like the option. Ideally three first team quality strikers and attacking miss needed in the squad. So we need to sign a forward and two AMs.

There is no evidence at all that Bidwell is clearly better at CB

I'd like a couple of pacy wingers, so we can adapt to a 4231/433 when we're struggling to break teams down.

Kane, Walker and Waghorn wont all go for starters.

Also if Godden had been fit we would have seen more of Godden and Gyok paired together - even if it was just for part of the game.

I know some people struggle with this but our results goals and chances created are just as good with one striker as with two (especially away from home).

To me he looks like he's got a decent cross on him and is defensively solid .. given a full pre season would be a Mr 7/10 .. he's a left wing/ back no doubt

Assuming no sales (or adding in replacements), I’d say:

2 CB
1 LWB
1 CM
2 AM
1 ST

Lack of options was a real issue this season.

If we can get real quality and some pace in at CB and CM I think we can get away with what we've got elsewhere. Won't happen though.

I've wondered for a while if our formation is getting the best out of us. Wing backs are so key to that, and I don't feel like the ones we have are particularly effective. I would also like to see us change it up, have a plan B dice to roll if things aren't working. It generally always feels like we just make like for like changes in that circumstance though, perhaps at most put a striker on for an AM or vice versa.

We've been playing with effectively 5 defenders for ages and we are still shit at defending anyway. Would be interesting to see what players we get in and if that allows for some modification of the system. Not that I expect for that to happen particularly.

The issue we have is that with the back 5 you don't have flexibility to change to wingers as we play narrow. We don't have a single winger on the books presuming we let Jones go. Maybe Bapaga if we are counting him? So that means we would need to bring in at least 3 wingers this summer to provide us with that option, which is a huge amount of the budget I would think, but the reason we have gone with a back 3 in my eyes is because arguably none of the CB's are good enough to make a back 4 solid enough, at least not in the current pairings we could have. So that's another 1/2 signings that would need to be made. Even as a plan B getting wingers in isn't exactly likely given nobody will want to be sitting on the bench hoping for us to want to change system.

Even if you don't sign wingers the only option is then a narrow midfield which means signing at least a couple of midfield players to supplement the group and add goals. Can't see a massive shift in formation this summer, but like you i would perhaps like one but think we are far too committed financially at this moment to the formation we have. We do need greater output from the fullbacks probably in terms of assists more than goals, but he fullbacks we have are contracted so need suitors for them before we can upgrade. I do think Bidwell would be much better in a 4 than as a wingback.

Interesting to see what happens

Ok so people are slagging off Kane and Waghorn. Last year they where slagging off Allen and it was all sell sell sell.

With independant votes across the season on MOM - he has come in with people like Hamer, O'Hare, and Gyokores.

So dont be so quick to write some players off... and ffs in the summer learn something about footbal tactics. It is not all about the pass and the shot Learn to watch the game and not just follow the ball.

One of the big positives with the club at the moment is the pattern of play so wouldn't want to see the formation changed radically. At times I have hated the box midfield but that is because our attacking midfielders are very poor, don't contribute enough goal threat and have any pace. When Godden and Vik have started we have put in some brilliant performances. If we addressed the attacking midfielders, the formation in my opinion would be great. Although the wingbacks need to also contribute much more in terms of goals and assists.

I think he'll stick with the 2 formations. They're clearly effective and opposition teams struggle to cope with them.

We've just lacked another top quality AM to really make the most of the box formation. Hopefully we can keep O'Hare and add another quality AM and I can see the box being very effective at this level.

Generally, I agree. I’d like to see a winger in one of the AM slots in the ‘box’. Something like a championship quality Jodi Jones/Bright type player. A bit more skill and pace going forwards to link up with Gyo and COH.

I think Robins would work towards this (potentially) given that we signed Bright last year and after Huddersfield MR said something along the lines that JJ could ‘transform’ the team.

And he played Maatsen there a few times too. So he's certainly not averse to it. A little bit of pace in that position definitely would be good

I think we're unlikely to change much. Mixed messages and can't afford players not to be included in the basis they don't fit a system. Solid strength in depth for how we play is how I think recruitment will go. Arguably a little one dimensional and tactics easy to counter, but it's served well so far and if we can improve on converting a few more of the created chances and not giving sloppy ones away we'll do okay again.
