A lot is made of us allowing a £20m player to leave on a free in Vik but if we had a bid of £5/6m for Hamer, I'd happily allow him to leave for free next season.

I'd want £10m before allowing Hamer to go. We'd need to spend millions for replace him and wouldn't likely get a player that good.

I fear it won’t work that way. Look at Gyokeres. Cov allegedly demanded £25 million for him but that price is dropping, possibly to under £20 million.

Hanging on to players for their last season runs the risk of them not fully committing to the cause. There is no way Cov will try to hang on to Gyokeres. The club just can’t afford to miss out on that sort of money. I think the same applies to any bid for Hamer.

You only get £25m for proper players like Alex Scott IMO. Agreed?

No, I am naming a player who Liverpool signed from Cov at a reduced fee because of his disciplinary record and relative age.

I probably wouldn’t state it, unless I was certain it was a fact ;)

The original price was £2 million but the Liverpool board refused to pay it. It dropped to about £600,000, as I recall.

But that might not be a fact :p

The big comparison is Brereton Diaz. Arguably he declined last season but nearly pushed Blackburn to the play offs and had 18 goals/assist. They could have had £20m last season and let him go for free.

Yeah that’s a good point. But Diaz was content to stay. Gyokeres wants to leave. Doug King just made it slightly more complex with an ill-advised criticism of the player in the open press

He is clearly very aspirational, but that's what the talks are supposedly. Doug will be telling him we've sold more season tickets than ever and want the play offs.

Even so, the season ticket sales don’t cover wages, rent, other costs. Which is why Doug King said last season that ticket prices need to go up. He even said that only additional revenue could fund players. Gyokeres is gone and has no intention of staying at Cov. Hamer might be a different story.

The bid for Diaz last year was supposedly only €10m (according to The Athletic which is reliable).

I would keep Gyok if that was what we were being offered.

There is zero point me naming another player because unless someone has specifically said it in the media (why would they...) it would be a consideration behind closed doors. Disciplinary record is something that would be taken in to account. Obviously he has done a fantastic job over the 2nd half of the season stopping the cards. I think another half a season those question marks dissappear. The reason I said next season double goes way beyond that if he continues ripping up the championship as he did 2nd half of the season it will prove he can maintain that level of performance as well as have a great Disciplinary record. Do you disagree with the 7m BTW?

Don't get me wrong, it's a massive task to replace them, but we are a level lower, and our money would in theory go further in this division, along with having a half-competent manager!

What we're never going to do is be consistently successful as long as we rely on a couple of players maintaining top form with a cast of loanees who then bog off elsewhere the next season.

I think £7m is cheap for Hamer when Bristol City want £25m for Scott.

I agree however that Hamer stepped up another level when he was pushed further forward in the second half of the season.

Central midfield players who can be as impactful as Hamer in the final third normally command a premium.

I believe his contract length will impact his price far more than his early season cards.

I agree contract length is a part so is consistency etc etc. I'd love £25m for Hamer but if we are considering if Gyok is worth that or not and strikers generally go for more cash I just can't see it getting above £10m.

Yes that’s it. Hamer wants to stay and play for us. It will be pretty gutting if Hamer moves just because we couldn’t agree a new contract with him. He’s one of the best in this league and should be compensated fairly for that.

Ahhh yes if he leaves it’ll all be the club’s fault. Weren’t you claiming a couple of days ago that he’d already signed a 2 year deal with us?

Maybe some positive news about Hamer about to emerge in the next week or two about signing a new contract. That would be a real boost to the club.
