He has been one of our best players. I dread to think what the results would have been without him. Think people are looking in the wrong place for scapegoats.
He’s not really top half championship level though, he can put in a decent shift now and again but consistently game after game for 90 mins I’m not sure how good he is at this level (cue Kelly scoring an absolute worldie today).

I agree our results would have been worse without him but that’s because we’ve literally got no other experienced midfielder to play in that position, we’re literally down to our bare bones in midfield atm. I don’t necessarily think he’s making our team better, I think he’s filling a space and just about holding a very weak midfield together.

Not saying he’s to blame at all but it does highlight just how bad recruitment has been over the summer.
I don't really agree. How us one of our best performers the problem.

The biggest weakness in our recruitment (let's delay judgement on Simms and Wright for now) was the failure to recruit to the AM position. We were fine for central midfield as Kelly has proved. Sheaf, Eccles and Kelly are all fine. We also added Ayari who so far looks well out of his depth.

But we added no AM in the summer. We were already short in this oosition and had to play Hamer out of position there at the end if last season. We went into the season with only Palmer who we know is ridiculously injury prone. As a result we have had to play Ayari out of position and probably before he is ready.

The root of our lack of creativity isn't really the central midfield who are doing ok, it's the lack of delivery from the AM. Hopefully Allen can get up to speed and fill in and eventually O'Hare can get back to his old level. However, I think people already have totally unreal expectations about O'Hare.

Kelly is a decent squad player for emergencies but shouldn't be considered a first team player, so can't agree that we were fine for CM if we're actually looking for more than lower midtable.

I've put a tenner on Ayari's cock to be first scorer.

You can laugh, but its still got more chance of coming in than Simms to score at anytime!

Love it 😂 Although I do think Simms is slowly starting to work out where the door is and I think he’ll start knocking on it soon enough 😂

Completely agree, I just can’t believe that some people are happy with the idea of Kelly and Eccles in CM and are fine with the lack of recruitment in that position. Sheaf is alright, and I don’t mean that lightly, but even he isn’t spectacular, he’s solid and that’s good but I think if that’s our absolute best player in midfield then it’s a pretty poor outlook. As the last few weeks have proved we don’t just need one or two good players, we need a decent selection so when injuries or suspensions occur we can adjust accordingly. Atm it’s just hope, pray and bumble our way through to the next week, simply not good enough if we’re aiming for top 6 consistently.

Yea, tbf he had a decent first half against Huddersfield, (he had no service second half) hopefully the effort he had that resulted in Ayari's World class finish will give his confidence a boost.

I've given him some stick for his piss poor performances so far, but I'd love to see what he can do once he gets his form and fitness right, and a goal today would do him the world of good.

We desperately need one of the two new strikers to start contributing, otherwise it's going to be a long slog till January's transfer window.

I'm convinced some people are saying it because they think it makes them sound like some football intellectual because they can see something that the masses can't.

Kelly playing regularly for us is going backwards 3 or 4 years in that position

Couldn’t agree more, I’d love to see Simms score and then Wright come on and score (big ask I know) as it’ll give us and the team so much more confidence. Once/if they’ve proved they’re good enough then hopefully Wright and Simms can finally start a game together, would love to see that, or a return to the box, just something different and interesting would be nice.

Great point tbf, to think it’s good to play a slow 33 year old that lacks vision and agility in a real key role like CM and in a formation that doesn’t suit our attackers just seems bizarre to me. I realise he’s looked alright on occasions but I really question his consistency game after game over 90 mins.
(I just know he’s gonna score now to make this post look ridiculous later on 😂)

You have to wonder, how many other teams going for promotion would be happy with him in their starting 11.

Exactly, he wouldn’t even make the bench in most top 6 teams. I feel bad disrespecting him because he’s been brilliant for the team over the years but, just like Vik/Gus, we have to move on from thinking Kelly is a saviour.

Actually, it was a dead easy journey. Parked at Westfield. In a Macdonalds three minutes according to Google Maps from the ground. Might drive next season too. Fuck the trains off.

What really makes your point look rediculous is the fact that Kelly got m.o.m as recently as last Monday night.

He's not in the squad to play every week, he's here to come off the bench for the last 10 minutes of games we need to see out.

He's only playing 90 minutes due to injuries to Sheaf, Palmer, Allen and O'hare, and our total inability to replace Hamer. If you take 5 first team midfielders out of any championship side, they'd struggle, and they'd snap your hand off for a Kelly to step in.

Moaning about Kelly's lack of vision is laughable when there's zero movement or pace upfront, and neither of our strikers can hold the ball up.

People complaining about Kelly and Eccles together as a pairing just don't understand the limitations that MR is having to work with.

So the Eccles/Kelly debate rumbles on…..,,,,
Kelly-the best player on Monday night but apparently his “legs have gone” and “he’s past it” and “they are both the same type of player”
If that’s the case then and they’re too similar-how do people rate Eccles? 🤔

Personally I don't buy in to the idea that Robins just decided not to replace Hamer. Any number of things could have happened but we do know that as late as deadline day Robins was still talking about getting someone in. Maybe our targets went elsewhere, maybe clubs thought we had a bit to spend and hiked the prices up, or some other reason

Let's be honest, if any one of O'Hare, Allen, Palmer or Sheaf were match fit they'd be in the starting XI. Not sure there's many Championship clubs that could lose that many players and not be putting out a weaker side even before you consider losing arguably the best midfielder in the Championship last season relatively late in the transfer window

You've just listed the reasons why we shouldn't play the 4 3 3 you keep banging on about!

We haven't the personnel, we did last season, but not now.

Yeah, because playing a few games towards the end of the season is really the same as him now being one of our main CMs this season.
Yeah first choice midfield was

Hamer - Sheaf ( Eccles 3rd choice, Allen 4th choice brining in Palmer into the ACM, Kelly 5th choice)
Allen - O'Hare (Palmer 3rd choice,)
