I am still convinced Simms will come good, hasn’t really had much of a chance tbh. Similar to Godden, Simms wants the ball given to him in the box and that hasn’t been happening at all, Godden feeding off scraps and loose balls.

O’Hare coming back will be a massive turning point in our season. Fingers crossed he comes back ok.

Wright however, I just don’t see it. A loan move back to Turkey beckons. Hope he proves me wrong.

The fact our recruitment team was looking at some other geezer when they spotted Sakamoto says it all really, they saw him play well and thought “yeah sound we’ll have him”.
I’m sure there’s a lot of contract bullshit that goes on but it doesn’t sound like a specialist sort of job, just need good scouts like Brighton have, fingers in lots of pies etc.

Its a numbers game to a certain extent though, right? Like buying stocks, you can put all your portfolio into one big bet, or you can make smaller bets or some mix of the two.

Sure & the higher the fee you're willing to pay I would suggest is the more 'certain' you are that the player is the right fit & can make an impact pretty quickly. Countless examples of players going for huge fees that haven't worked out too though, there's no guarantees.

Lower end would be players not currently of the required standard but that you believe there is potential in or players being passed on by other clubs due to other issues (long-standing injury etc). Remember, it's not like it used to be where a scout can go watch a game & pick up an unheard of superstar. All clubs now have huge scouting databases so to get one up on the competition is very difficult.

This is my concern with Wright, he had that early goal to settle him down yet seems to have regressed.
Simms hasn't had that yet but hopefully once he does he'll kick on, though I think it's going to be a tough few months as it's fair to say we're not at our most creative currently.

You look at Sakamoto and Wright in particular and it just looks like they’ve not been selected well to do a particular job in the team, I don’t think even Robins knows where to play Sakamoto atm, he’s clearly lacking in the defensive areas of the pitch and Wright doesn’t seem to be the type of striker we need up top atm. All the things you mentioned there about a system, way of playing, culture, I completely agree but it seems like none of that has been considered with the signings we’ve bought.

Oh no of course. I think we got very lucky finding Gus. And to some extent Vik (though Brighton had done the hard bit).

With Gus, as most know he had been shifted to RWB at Zwolle, so would probably have dropped off many teams radars (if he was even on there). It was Badlan's prior knowledge of him that saw him as a CM & recommended him on that basis. Even then we had to fight off other clubs offering more money.

Well there's obviously some finger pointing going on about who's to blame for what. But based on the spending that King has sanctioned up to this point, I'd be surprised if a CM target had been identified, price agreed and then he pulls the plug on it.

With Sakamoto, I think Robins has said as much, he's a bit of a punt in that he's a very good player but he needs to learn the game over here & what his role will be in our side. He's played wingback a lot at his previous club, but every team uses their wingbacks in different ways & he needs to become attuned to his defensive responsibilities more here. Even van Ewijk has looked tentative in his appearances so far, unsure whether he should be taking his man on, bombing forward or covering defensively & nobody doubts his quality.

I think wingback is arguably the hardest role to learn at a new club. I know Norton-Cuffey wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but the improvement he showed from the beginning where he looked completely lost to being a standout in the Playoffs shows it takes time & this is a player who already had dozens of wingback appearances in English football before his move here.

With Wright, I said it at the time of his signing, but his style of player looks an obvious fit. The power, pace & dribbling style is similar to Gyokeres (not quite as refined yet) but he can score in a variety of ways too. Admittedly, it's not quite happening for him just yet but that's normal & I'm not unduly concerned. I read on the other thread about him possibly being a bit of an introvert, again these things will all be a factor.

I'd hope that if they went to watch another player and identified Sakamoto, you'd then restart the process with Saka as the main focus. Working out exactly what he does and how he fits in to how we play. At the moment it doesn't look like that was done and now we're looking at him trying to figure out what to do with him. We did pay a decent fee for him as well in terms of our expenditure in recent seasons and we spent ages scouting Hamer for a similar fee.

It just feels like we've had that kid in a sweetshop mentality and spent our pocket money on the first thing that catches out eye and now we're sitting in the park with a poorly tummy feeling sick.

Simms and wright will both come good imo. Have to think robins got them both because by end of season he wants them as a partnership?

Thomas looks good albeit with a clanger in him from time to time.

Binks looks classy at LCB.

Milan seems most likely candidate to bag us a profit in future.

Collins and kithcing not played yet but give us squad depth for now.

Ayari for me looks class but will need time to adapt to championship football.

Saka I think was bought to be utility player and he's done that role so far.

My main concern with the recruitment is that big money has been spent on players who are yet to make an impact, while obvious gaps in the squad remain. All of the signings appear to have ability, I’m just not yet convinced it’s £20 million worth.

It's been done to death on here . My feelings are the Sheaf injury has made the squad issues seem bigger than they are . Had he stayed fit we wouldn't have rushed Ayari in so quickly and with Allen returning we would've certainly been a more fluid side .

It can’t have meant that, he’s only been used as a sub or replacement for Palmer. 3 games in 7 days will probably mean he has to start in place of Allen for one of next week’s matches.

We needed more in central midfield even without Hamer leaving.

To be fair we only had 2-3 defenders on the books at the start of the summer so you can understand why that was a priority. Simms will be a player for us but Wright hasn't looked great so far
