I'm amazed our manager and former professional striker for man utd keeps playing him as all our expert UEFA qualified former pros on SBT and Facebook think goddens pointless .. what does Robins know eh

Intelligent pressing 👌

Didn't Godden's effort on to the bar come from him and others pressing? It doesn't need to be effective every time. Just sometimes. He seems as good at it as anyone apart from Allen.

Don't you think robins or adi would have pulled him to the side and told him to stop pointlessly pressing after 4 years ?
Come on now , someone who sits 30-40 yards away from him for 90 minutes once a week surely has a better idea of what he's doing right or wrong 🤔

Do you think our manager is thick ?

Adi 'he's pressing again gaffer, why don't you drop him?'

MR 'No Adi, I'm going to keep playing him until he learns not to do it'

Adi 'what about the gammon gaffer? They wont be happy when he stops'

MR ' I'll cross that bridge when I come to it'.

So you think Mark robins is not asking godden to press the back line and keeper as its pointless , he's doing it in vain to please the gammons

Warra logic

I don’t think he’s doing it to please anyone, and I agree he’s doing it because Robins has told him, but I don’t think it’s effective pressing with just one striker. The opposition simply pass the ball to an unmarked defender and then Godden just moves to that other defender, repeat over and over.

We should either press as a team or have our striker in a position ready to counter, waiting for that through ball to be played. Currently we’re doing neither, we’re chasing the ball rather than winning it and that means our strikers are never in a position to run onto a well timed through ball. We’re always standing in front of their defence rather than waiting on the shoulder ready to run onto a ball. A mix of both doesn’t work, you either press as a unit in 2’s or 3’s or you try to win the ball in midfield and have your strikers ready to run. It’s fine applying a bit of pressure here and there but to do it constantly whilst giving up that on-the-shoulder position doesn’t help us. Whatever Godden wants to do is clearly up to him, I just think he’s wasting a shit ton of energy running around like a headless chicken whilst never winning the ball.

Robins clearly thinks it adds something which is why he keeps playing, but I don’t think it does.

Not gonna bother continuing trying to explain.

Completely agree; pressing in isolation is pointless.

I watch Mo salah chase and Harry defences all the time ..the objective is not always to win back the ball , we can choose to press to delay an attack or change the course of an oppositions next ball .. matty godden chasing down defenders to force a pass is basic striker press 101 .. Vik used to do exactly the same and I never saw anybody question the need for it ??

Again I ask the question , if godden wasn't pressing as required then wouldn't the manager have pulled him over and corrected him ?

Actually I will continue because you’ve just compared Matt Godden to Mo Salah 😂😂😂

Never mind the fact Liverpool play a completely different tactical system to us, or that we’re clearly playing slightly different to last year, it must be good for everyone because Salah does it!

We rarely press in isolation , godden often tries to press a keeper into hurrying his kick/ pass

As a team we generally mix it up , we sometimes allow teams to play infront of us and we sometimes press using wingback the attacking midfielder getting higher

Not a single part of my statement is comparing mo salah and matty godden as players .. you have spoken alot of waffle today ..as per

I completely get that and I realise he’s only doing what Robins is asking of him but I don’t think pressing should be fruitless, if we did it as a team then fair enough but I don’t feel like we play that way. We sort of get close to the ball but never press in 2’s or 3’s, it’s a half-press, in which case we might as well not press at all.
Godden running around chasing the ball doesn’t add anything to our game, it just tires him out quicker. I’m not saying we shouldn’t press but if we do press then we should press as a team, not just Godden on his own. If we want to play that way then clearly Godden should keep his place as he’s good at pressing but if we don’t want to press then I feel Wright and Simms should start. I feel like it’s quite a mixed bag of pressing and not-pressing atm.

It wasn't exactly fruitless, Godden's shot off the bar came from pressing them on the edge of their own penalty area.

We have pressed in 2s and 3s in the past few seasons, some of the other players are just not at the right level for it still. Wait until O'Hare is back.

Matty godden has to start right now and I’m a big critic of his

his work rate right now and knowledge of the system is priceless with a stretched squad

I know a lot of posters want to see Simms and Wright partnered together given the fees paid but both lack experience of the championship. Playing alongside Godden will help both adapt and while he's scoring goals will take the pressure off them from certain sections of our fanbase

It's like we don't train as well, so they never get a chance unless it's in a game!

I still laugh at my mate who argued black and blue with me in the car that biamou and bakayoko were better strikers .. both are having exceptional careers whilst one is scoring in the championship still ..

Coventry fans have always loved shit players

I'm sure Jacob murphy looks back at our fans that crucified him and laughs as he plays against AC Milan and PSG in the CL 😂

That's exactly what pressing is, it's often a fruitless task.
But he's doing exactly what Robins wants him to do.
If it's exactly what he's being asked to do why isn't it happening all game? Would expect to see the keeper chased down multiple times in first half alone wouldn't you? In injury time when rest of team is falling back to park bus seems an odd time for robins to trigger it that's all.
