It’s the right choice for all parties ultimately, and fair play to him for doing it so quickly. Gives plenty of time to get the right person in and start planning.

A great man who conducts himself with pure class but a change was needed, four tournaments is enough of a fair chance for anyone

Problem we’ve got is that we don’t really have any English managers who’ve won anything major, whereas other countries do have that. And I think you need that in order to get over the line - which is why we went down the foreign manager route before.

He was exactly what was needed at the time and did a fantastic job of changing the whole attitude of the England players and the fans' outlook towards England.
But we've outgrown him now and he's not the right manager for this group of players, and it's time for someone else to have a go.

To be fair, De La Fuente hadn’t won anything major as a manager until he took over Spain’s full team (not including youth championships)
I don’t think we should judge Howe and Potter too harshly for not winning anything major, as the top clubs with a serious chance of winning anything in this country have been a pretty closed shop managerially.
Plus, we’ve seen what a basket case Chelsea have been recently so am apprehensive about judging Potter too harshly for not succeeding there in such a short period of time.

I won't judge them harshly, I'm just not sure the England job is so attractive for them if your reputation gets trashed for not winning the world cup in the style of Brazil 1982 or 86. Potter maybe as he's out of work, but assuming Newcastle will be reasonably patient with Howe, wouldn't his better bet be to try and win something with them, so his reputation holds up when he inevitably fails with England (as everybody has since 1966)?

I think whoever the next manager is will be hoping he gets the luck that Southgate did with the draws in each tournament. Yes I think he did well unifying the squad and the whole set-up, but the fawning over him from some I feel seem to ignore the fact that he's had an easy ride to get to these Semi-Finals/Finals. Anytime we've come up against decent opposition he's failed (Germany 2021 aside)

Potter would be out of his depth. He couldn't cope with the Chelsea job so certainly couldn't take the pressure of the England job.
Howe is inconsistent and can be tetchy with the media which is disastrous for an England manager. He really should have done better at Newcastle with the resources he has had. Does have periods of success though.

I don’t think there’s any rhyme or reason for what makes a good international team manager. On paper, Steve McLaren is a better, and more successful manager than Southgate, yet McLarens England run was abysmal and Southgate was a nose hair from 2 euro championships.

To be fair I don't think any of the subsequent managers could cope with the job after Potter so might be harsh to judge him on that. I think he's a good coach, good enough for England? I'm unsure.
